Updating to Release 14 (FLAC 1.2.1)

I am a new user and my question is "simply" this:

when I want to update my FLAC files to the latest FLAC codec. Do I first need to convert these to WAV, then to FLAC or simply (e.g. FLAC 1.1.1 --- FLAC 1.2.1)

FLAC to FLAC

or

FLAC to WAV to FLAC

Somewhere I heard that there is a chance to loose some data if it is made wrongly. I just want to do it the right way

FLAC to FLAC is best.
