Ripper has been going fine for several hundred CDs, now suddenly stalls after ripping & will not encode (to m4a Nero AAC). Have reinstalled everything - dBpoweramp, codec & Nero encoder. I am aware of no change on my machine that could account for this sudden change in behaviour, see no comparable problem discussed in fora & can think of nothing to get around the problem. Have tried three different drives, even uninstalled & rebooted to ensure that DMA (Ultra DMA Mode 5 in this case) is in use. Please help.

Re: Ripper rips but won't encode
Not much... I have tried burst & secure ripping, ripping to alternate codecs including Test Conversion. All combinations on all drives rip at reasonable speed but produce an Error status or sit indefinitely at 0% Conversion. My machine is dual core, so you end up with CPU1 & CPU2 both sitting at 0% for a long time. Leaving it overnight finds a very slow progression through the tracklist with failure on each track. Error messages look like this:
Error ripping to m4a Nero (AAC), 'Track 2' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared datafiles - unavailable offline\Music archive - (near) lossless formats\Rubén González\Chanchullo\Rubén González - 02 - De una Manera Espantosa.m4a'
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 23423 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 42833) [clRipperSecure::Rip]
Error ripping to m4a Nero (AAC), 'Track 3' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared datafiles - unavailable offline\Music archive - (near) lossless formats\Rubén González\Chanchullo\Rubén González - 03 - La Lluvia.m4a'
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 42834 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 66751) [clRipperSecure::Rip]
Error ripping to m4a Nero (AAC), 'Track 4' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared datafiles - unavailable offline\Music archive - (near) lossless formats\Rubén González\Chanchullo\Rubén González - 04 - Central Constancia.m4a'
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 66752 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 93557) [clRipperSecure::Rip]

Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 104794 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 135696) [clRipperSecure::Rip]
Error ripping to m4a Nero (AAC), 'Track 1' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared datafiles - unavailable offline\Music archive - (near) lossless formats\Rubén González\Chanchullo\Rubén González - 01 - Chanchullo.m4a'
Track Ripped Insecurely.
The oddest thing to me is that this behaviour appeared during a ripping session; a stack of CDs ripped successfully then the next did not!
Thank you for your prompt reply. Incidentally, the OS is WinXP Pro SP*blooper* completely updated but with some other oddities that I cannot track down. These are: 1) I have been unable to install IE 8 (but use Firefox anyway so have not bothered about it); 2) unable to install Secunia. I run Norton 360 v2, again fully updated of course, & Bill Pytlovany's WinPatrol. The machine is connected by Ethernet to a home network on which one other machine, a Toshiba laptop, functions perfectly. A Sonos music system shares the network, as does a Wii games machine & sometimes a Nokia N95 'phone.
Thank you

Try CD Ripper >> Options >> Communication : set to the Windows Built-in option.Comment

Re: Ripper rips but won't encode
Thank you Spoon. I tried that. No change in behaviour. I am thinking that I need to set up another userid with a clean environment, then try running the product in there. If that does not work I may start from scratch with an OS reinstallation. I am very reluctant to do this but can think of nothing to account for this frustrating behaviour. DComment

Re: Ripper rips but won't encode
I found this post after running into the same problem, and wanted to respond with a possible work around. Re-install did not do the trick either. What did seem to work was creating a new profile for ripping. This was just a copy of my original profile, but placing the output on a local drive. After this worked fine, I changed the output to go to my NAS, as in the original configuration, and this worked fine. I am happily ripping away again. :smile2:Comment
