Is a joint stereo mp3 better than a normal stereo mp3 for converting cd albums? Help!

are joint stereo mp3s better in all round quality than normal stereo mp3s- when converting music from cd to a constant 320kbps? I have heard many 'experts' from other sites sometimes contradict one another! I am not sure what lame uses but i have heard playing back a normal stereo mp3 will only ever work from left and right speakers, but music can be recorded to joint stereo to play on a surround system, although quality is slightly lower on average comparing to a normal stereo file of the same bitrate-any truth to any of this? Which is best for quality recording? I have heard lame uses joint stereo automatically but properties on any mp3 just states "stereo" and not "joint stereo". Anyone? thanks for any info

Yes, the process is lossless [AFAIK] in Lame and increases the amount of bits available to improve quality.
