    sound wont play...

I watched a video on youtube, the sound isnt working....I tried to listen to music on real player, its not working...I checked if anything was mute but it looks fine. I tried recording with audacity and it says "Error while opening sound device. Please check input device settings" Please help me out, I know this is WAYYYY off topic.
Note : I can access Master Volume and I also use Windows XP.

    Moved to Off Topic Forum.
Can you play sound files with Windows Media Player? Is your soundcard a USB device, PCI card, or internal?

Go to your Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Audio
What choices do you have in the top two drop-down boxes?

It seems like your sound drivers are corrupt, you should probably reinstall them. Now, where you get the installer depends on what sound card you have.
Is there a local computer-knowledgeable person you can ask to help? I say that because this is a very delicate and detail-intensitive process.

is there a way to find out exactly what I have, just by looking at a program.

Download and install Belarc Advisor. It will give you a Computer Profile Summary that will list everything on your computer. You can get it here: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

What chipset did Belarc said you have? Does it also mention the southbridge you have? If it doesn't mention either of these, does it say the motherboard and model that you have?
