i need a custom icon place on the desktop.

it's actually a shortcut of an HTML file buried in the install directory.

the icon is the yellow exclamation point that is part of

c:\windows\explorer.exe

icon package.

yet, i cant pick that.

is that possible?

You should be able to do it manually though - if you can get =some= shortcut (with a 'wrong' icon) on the desktop, you can then right click it, properties, shortcut, change icon, and pick what you want (a pretty dangerous facility by the way!).
