The CD writer only seems to support v1 of ID3 tags. Is this right?

I don't think so. It may depend upon what you are trying to do.
Being based upon dMC (dBpowerAMP Muisic Converter), I would think that dCW (dBpowerAMP CD Writer) would have the same tagging capabilities as dMC (which I know off the top of my head includes at least ID3v1, ID3v.2, and Ape). However, you can't use all tags in all situations.
You may want to check and consider experimenting with your tag settings. These are set through your dMC Configuration program (Start>All Progams>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration>dBpowerAMP Music Converter Configuration).
Otherwise, for more definitive guidance you might want to share what you are hoping to accomplish and we might be better be able to advise whether you can do what you are looking for with dCW and (if so) how best to do it.
