    CD writer bloats files

I try to burn on CD some wav files (44,1 - 16 bits) but
CD writer ''bloats'' the lenght of the files : it tells me for instance that a file uses 6 minutes 15'' of space when the real lenght of the file is 3' 50''. Why ?
    (win XP - R13)
(I would like to send you a screenshot, but do not know how to do it)

If you hold the mouse over a file before CD writer gets it, what length does the popup info show it to be. Also what are the files?

      1) The right lenght : 3 minutes 50 seconds;
      2) musical files wav 44,1 Hz, 16 bits

See where CD writer is writing its temp files (normally %appdata%\dbpoweramp\dBpoweramp-CDWriterTmp)

These are wave files, hold the mouse over those to check the length.

Yes, there, under the name ''track 1'', is the file with the correct length
          (3' 50''). What does this mean ?

I am not sure what your results mean except that it looks like your problem appears to occur somehow during the burning process. You might check the following questions for leads.

Are you applying any DSP effects? If so, which one(s)?

Do the "bloated" files play the correct length?

What writing speed are you using for your burning (and have you tried using a slower writing speed)?

Are you enabling Buffer Underwrite Protection when burning?

Have you tried using a different brand of blank CD disk?

Does this happen with all files or just with some?

If you have more than one drive capable of burning CDs, does this happen with other drive(s)?

Perhaps one or more of these factors might give us a lead.

            Best wishes,
            Bill

              1) No DSP effects
              2) Yes,the files are the correct length
              3) I burn always at 4X
              4) yes
              5) yes
              6) all
              7) didn't try

In fact, the bloated files are just in CDwriter's imagination... Example: I wanted to burn 9 files for a total length of 71 minutes 24 seconds on a 8O minutes disc I had at hand. CD writer tells me :'' 116 m 33s used (145%) 36 minutes 33 s overburn''. It is clearly impossible to do such an overburn but CD doesn't realize the impossibility... and burns the disc. Correctly.
So, CD writer does just lie. Why ?

                Maybe I misunderstood.

It looks like you are saying that the erroneous file length data shows up in the CD Writer window as you are writing the CD, but that the temporary CD tracks show the correct length and the tracks play the correct length. Is the track length on the burned CD is also correct?

If this is so, then the problem would seem to occur prior to burning. Did these files start out in a different format before burning? If so, what was their format and what were the file properties (bits, bitrate, channels)? Did you use CD Writer and/or Music Converter to convert these prior to burning or did you use a different program (and if so, what program did you use)?

                Bill

                  Re: CD writer bloats files

Thank you Bill, you have stated exactly the problem and yes, the burned track has the correct length.
Some were wav files, others were flac files 24 bits
converted by me (with Music Converter) to wav 16 bit.
Cannot find head nor tail in this issue...

                    Re: CD writer bloats files

My guess is that this is related to the 24 bit Flac files (although if either the wave or Flac files are 48 kHz, this could also play a role). I assume you are selecting your files in Music Converter and choosing to convert to Audio CD or that youo are opening CD Writer and accessing the files (including the 24 bit Flac files) from CD Writer.

My recommendation would be to use Music Converter to create 16 bit, 44.1 kHz wave copies of these tracks separately, and then use CD Writer to create your CD using the already converted files. You should be using the Bit Depth DSP when converting from 24 bit to 16 bit, and the Resample DSP if and when you are converting from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz.

                    Hope this helps,
                    Bill
