Error converting flac to flac reconversion failed

Alas, the manual doesn't really help me with this one.

I am currently compressing some FLAC files from uncompressed to higher compression rations (still FLAC). I have opted not to do the entire NAS at one go just in case of problems, and am doing a about 500 files at a time. I am using the batch converter, and all has been going reasonably well, but a batch earlier today generated an error log, saying conversion failed and reconversion failed. Alas, I didn't make a note of these files (we all have our little moments of aberration!), and can't recall exactly which ones were involved, but I have sampled about 40 files from that batch, and all appear to be OK, but are now compressed.

    So, my questions are :
    1. How do I look at the error log again to see which files didn't convert properly?
    2. What happens when this error is generated? Is the original file left untouched, or do I have to re-rip these files?

    Thanks, John

The error log is not saved anywhere.

The originals are never touched on error, you would have to post the exact error message here so I could comment on it.

Re: Error converting flac to flac reconversion failed

Alas, I cannot post you the exact error message, as the last 7000 files I have done since you posted have converted with no problem! However, since my original post, there was one disc which apparently failed to convert correctly (The Best Of Cutting Crew), and I tried reripping that disc with different tags (so I didn't overwrite my working copy). CD Ripper had problems with it, wanting to rerip 450 frame etc, on almost every track, and I finished up ripping to lossless FLAC using the "burst" option. Lo and behold this copy then would also not convert. On examining the original CD, it has several very obvious pressing flaws. I had intended to post you a copy of the error report, but on repeating this exercise this evening, no error was reported by Batch Converter.

Thinking back, IIRC, at least some of the files which I had a problem with I also had to resort to "burst" ripping. The problem with them is "CD rot" - mainly Hyperion discs which are now discoloured bronze/brown. So, it would seem to me that if CD ripper has had a serious problem ripping a file, then the Batch Converter (and I assume just single file conversion via Windows Explorer?) may report errors, although the file will be compressed, and will play without any very obvious glitches. Should I come across the problem again while doing my conversions, I will post the error report to you.

      Thanks, John

          Not using any DSP effects?

The line (which starts &) normally shows the error message, it is corrupted which suggests that something is not operating correctly (perhaps external influence).

No, I haven't used any DSP or other effects. I've actually now finished converting everything on my NAS. Out of >2500 albums, only 4 exhibited this problem (was the whole album, not just individual tracks). Every problematic album had had to be ripped in "burst" mode, as they all seemed to have problems with secure ripping, and every track actually plays! Doesn't really matter to me anymore now that I've finished the conversions, but thanks anyway.

Re: Error converting flac to flac reconversion failed

flac.exe -- the reference encoder -- has in the past had issues with updating files from filename.flac to filename.flac. What it is supposed to do, is encode tmpfilename.flac, verify that filename.flac and tmpfilename.flac have the same audio, and then delete source and rename target. At least earlier versions have been unreliable, so that if something goes wrong during copying, it fails to notice.

My solution is always as follows:

              (1) Re-encode from
              K:\path\filename.flac
              to
              L:\samepath\samefilename.flac

              (2) Use a bit-comparator that compares audio (like foobar2000) to compare K:\ and L:\
(fb2k requires same path structure, that everything is copied, and if you have non-flac audio in K:\, you must filter playlist first.)

              (3) Once you are sure that L:\ has same audio as K:\, copy back with overwrite L:\ to K:\

              (4) Use a bit-comparator again

              (5) Delete L:

For (4) and (5) I use the freeware tool xxcopy. Beware that it fragments files, so for (3) I simply use windows' drag+drop.
