Anyone encoding to Apple Lossless for iPod?

I'm interested in converting all my WMA 9.1 Lossless files to Apple Lossless (ALAC) files when they're copied over to the iPod (60GB iPod Photo) but I hate iTunes.

I'm wondering if anyone else already has this setup working and how it's working out for you. I keep thinking about installing iTunes to find out for myself but have everything working pretty well so I've held off for now.

I wish Apple would either just support WMA Lossless or release the info for ALAC so that we could get a real codec.

Right now, iTunes 5 doesn't work with the iTunes codec, but 4.x does. This is about the only problem I've heard regarding the iTunes codec regarding ALAC.

Are you sure on that? The iTunes codec uses a sort of com object to iTunes and it should work with newer versions.

Well, mabye I'm mistaken. Though there is the one person that had troubles with ALAC and e-mailed you one of the files. The other threads look like it was another issue.

My main concern is if I can install iTunes without it screwing up my existing setup.

Well, you would have to go into the iTunes Options and allow using the iPod as a storage device, and then disabling everything in iTunes that deals with the iPod, but it shouldn't bother anything else.

Re: Anyone encoding to Apple Lossless for iPod?

About iTunes - it installs lots of services (3 with latest - iPod Service, a CD writer service and a Harmony service), searching on the internet should show guids to disable them. OR install it, convert and uninstall...

@LTData: the problem was iTunes 5 Encoded Lossless audio files seem to break compatiblity with dbpoweramps ALAC decoder.

Aha, that was what iTunes 5 did then. Rats.
