newbie q's ... collection index, tag editor

    - in the collection index, i'd like to be able to select a genre entry (like 'classical') and see all the albums in the genre; then be able to select an album and either play it or see the tracks. any way to do this?

    - when i make changes via the dap tag editor, it seems to affect only the collection info, not the actual file tag. right?

Some tag items (notably preference ratings) are not transferable between dAP and other players. Other tag items are so that if you modify the track name, or artist name, or track number, or album name through the dAP tag editor, those changes should show up in other players which display those tag fields.

As to your first question, I see a couple of ways to try to accomplish this but I am trying to sort out which might be easiest and most convenient. I may try to post more on this in the morning.

    Best wishes,
    Bill

If this is what you are intersted in, I would point out the following options:

      1. Use the Selective Play button to select ONLY the genre in which you are interested (classical in your case). This will highlight all of your classical tracks in MMC but they will still be sequenced amongst all the tracks in MMC as they were.

      2. You can also automatically sort your MMC by Genre alphabetically by opening MMC and clicking on the Genre button. Then you can find that section of your collection that lies within your desired genre (classical) and you will see all of the tracks together.

      3. You can also open MMC, click on the Collection button, and click on Preferences. This will allow you to designate your preference as to how entries into MMC are are ordered. Default is Icon, Artist, Track, Genre, Preference, Length, Album, Track Number, and so forth. If you know you want your MMC sorted by Genre and you know you will want to view things by album and in album order, then you might want to designate priority as being Icon, Genre, Artist, Album, Track Number, Track, Length, Preference and so on. If you have a lot of compilation albums and you want to keep albums together then your desired order would be Icon, Genre, Album, Track #, Artist, Track (or Track, Artist), etc.

I would note that if you wanted to pursue the other 2 options, you will probably still find it advantageous to set Album as a preference before Track.

With any of these methods, you can then select either selected tracks including entire albums and either en-queue them or put them into a playlist.

These are the options I can figure out to achieve what you are asking. There is a possibility that someone else might have another means to address this same need.

      Best wishes,
      Bill

IIRC, there is an option to apply the MMC info to the file's tags. Right-click on a song, go to advanced, and then "Rewrite ID Tag" should refresh the file's tag with what is in MMC.
