Comparison of dBPowerAMP v other players.

I spent ages carrying out listening tests – (with and without equalizers) using different players incl. WinAmp, Sonique, Quintessential, Ultra Player, A2 Player, Passion Player, Jet Audio, Windows Media Player and dbPowerAMP.

The result. Having used a number of different players over the years it didn’t come as any surprise that there are often marked differences in sound quality. Many players sound somewhat the same but there was one clear winner….

You’ll be glad to know that dbPowerAMP (dAP), in my opinion has the best sound quality, followed by Ultra Player, then A2 Player. dAP simply adds another layer of openness and quality to the music.

BUT I WON’T BE USING dAP.

I simply cannot get my head around it’s method of playlisting songs. Help. It’s driving me nuts. From reading other listings in the forums I don’t seem to be the only one.

    1. Normally I add say 10 songs to the players playlist and play them (or parts of them), not necessarily in sequential order. So I might play ½ of song 1, skip to song 2, play song 2 again etc. I can do this by adding tracks to dAP’s playlist but I have to add tracks effectively using Windows Explorer and, as I have over 900 songs, this is very cumbersome.

    2. If I use My Music Collection, it adds the songs to the Play Control area. Play Control is total frustration. You can’t double click and play any track. You can’t play the same track again, as it deletes the track as soon as it’s played. It seems to be designed to play songs in strict order only.

    3. I know you can add songs from MMC to a playlist, but the option to do this is buried in a menu and every time I add a track a new playlist opens. Frustrating. I’ve tried QueMaster but, sorry, it’s no real benefit.

    4. When I play CDs dAP adds them to MMC’s Play Control area where, I have no control over the playing order.

    5. I have a program called MP3 Explorer (similar to MMC) for cataloging songs. I could use this instead of MMC but when I choose to enqueue a song from MP3 Explorer it tells me that dbP does not support Enqueueing. Strange.

I love the sound of dAP but I find using it so frustrating I feel like pulling my hair out ! So much so that I will probably use one of the other, inferior players.

Am I missing something? All I want to do is basically to be able to effectively bypass Play Control entirely. In other words (a) when I insert a CD that the tracks are added to a playlist or (b) when I click on songs in MMC (or MP3 Explorer) that they are added to a playlist, where I can have control over the playing order. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
    Tom
