Trying to start dAP, results in a crash 100% of the time

Any time I try to start dAP, it crashes (Send error report to Microsoft, etc.).
I have tried booting, reinstalling dAP, uninstalling all codecs and reinstalling them, trying to run with standard codecs only, etc.

the Music Collection and Options Menu programs seem to be working, though I still can't play any music with them.

My computer is a Dell with 1.8GHz Pentium processor, 365MB of RAM, and a GeForce 3 TI chip as a graphics card. Operating System is Windows XP Professional (upgraded from an OEM Windows ME)

What version of dAP are you using?
Have you had it for a while and had it work and it only just started crashing?
Or is this your first installation?
Does it crash when you try to play a cd, when you try to play saved files, or both?

Go to Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP>Configuration>File Associations and make sure that you set dAP associations for the file formats you wish to play.

Go Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP>Configuration>Install Options. What Options do you have checked? If you have checked the option to load dAP on startup, try unchecking this.

Do you have dB Music Converter installed also? What version? I would strongly recommend using either the current standard versions of dMC and dAP or the current beta versions of dAP and dMC rather than the standard version of one and the beta version of the other.

Try out these ideas and if they don't work, please send specifics as to the questions raised above.

    Best wishes,
    Bill Mikkelsen

Just downloaded standard versions of dAP and Sveta. Installed from a scratch. As for the crashing, it occurs every time I just try to start dAP (ie. dAP icon appears in systray, error message, byebye dAP).

As mentioned before, standard dAP and dMC is the one that comes with Sveta.

        OK
        dAP File Associations?
        dAP Install Options?

Both tried with standard settings (as they are suggested by dAP right after installation). The standard set doesn't include "Run on startup".

Try downloading and installing this routine (it will reset dAP's registry settings):

If that does not work, let me ask if you have installed dMC and dAP to their default locations?
Also, are you able to convert with dMC? If you pop a cd in your drive and open Audio CD Input can you play tracks successfully using preview play?

I'll try reinstalling them to their default directory, and report after it's done.

Installed them to default directories with default settings (dAP&dMC, no Sveta this time), both began to give errors.

dAP still won't start, I don't have a "preview" option on dMC, and a file called "dAPKeyControl.dll" in the previous installation directory refuses to be deleted.

Don't worry about the key control dll.
Have you installed the Power Pack? If not, do so (it will be free since you paid for Sveta). The preview feature is a power pack feature which you will see only in the dMC Audio CD Input window. My idea had been to see if the problem was limited to dAP.
It looks like if dMC had not had problems before this that it does now. When you say both began to give errors, can you share what the error messages or error symptoms might be? And is the system still crashing when you start up dAP?

I uninstalled both from the new location, too. (And I was only trying Sveta, not paid for anything yet) But, dAP crashed instantly (giving off the "dAP has encountered an error and is unable to continue normally. Etc."-message. Same for dMC at end of installation, otherwise dMC was error-free.

                      Just a moment...
Might it be because QCD (Quintessential Player, www.quinnware.com) is set up as the default player for most music formats on my comp?

                        Might be. Try disabling that.

Nope, still results in a crash.

                            Try going Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>File Associations.
Select dAP as the default program for your various audio files you want to play. Exit.
Go Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP>Configuration>File Associations. Make sure dAP is set to be associated with your desired audio file formats.
If QCD has a spot to set file associations make sure that you still have those file associations turned off.
                            Does dAP work now?

Same for dMC at end of installation, otherwise dMC was error-free
I'm not sure I understand. Did dMC crash on reinstallation? Does it work now?

I'm off to my paying job now. I'll check back in later tonight.
                            Best wishes,

Re: Trying to start dAP, results in a crash 100% of the time

Right after installation came the standard WIndows Error Message (a la "dMC has encountered an error and is unable to continue normally. Do you want to send an error report to Microsoft", etc.

But, seeing that the dAPKeyControl.dll in the old installation directory has vanished, I tried to install dAP again (C:\Ohjelmatiedostot\Illustrate) (Ohjelmatiedostot is the "Program Files" folder in Finnish Windows). Again an error immediately when I tried to start the player itself. This time, though, I saved the textfile which was sent to Microsoft, could it be any help in determining the nature of the problem?
