    Filw Association problem?

I have been using Mediaplayer as my default player. I just installed Audio player and Music Converter (down loaded last week). I quite quickly and easily reached a situation where either player could access and play the .wma and mp3 files in My Music, but then I discovered that neither player could play an audio Cd, although both could show album and track titles. The drive spun briefly on insertion and then went inactive.
I did try to control file association for both programmes, but unchecking every box in one program didn't make it possible for the other to ply the disc, and eventually I had to uninstall Audioplayer to regain a situation where the rest of the family could play music!
I expect its something embarrassingly obvious, but can anyone tell me what it is?

Did you check your Volume control to see where the audio input will come from? You should see a column for Cd player which is probably muted. Un-mute it. Actually you can unmute everything there except possibly for microphone.

Also check in dMC Audio CD Input > Options and look at the drive specified for cd inout. Is that correct?

Do the same thing in Windows Media Player > Tools > Devices. Is your drive there?

If none of there is the culprit, please come back and tell us again.

I checked the volume control - no surprises there. Both players could see my drives - they could tell me which cd was inserted.
I just reinstalled Audio player and allowed it to associate files as before, but now both players work quite happily on stored tracks and on cd's, even though Mediaplayer is now the default player for .wmv files only. It doesnt autorun anymore but plays happily from the Play menu, which is good behaviour as far as I'm concerned!
What can I say? They weren't behaving this way a few days ago, in fact when I let Real player out of its box that was incapacitated as well!
I suppose I'll never find out what it was now but at least while Mediaplayer is working OK I'm free to carry on checking out Poweramp without upsetting the family.

Last post was me too - sorry!
Its happened again, this time when I tried to use the Roxio software. Again, after trying to manually allocate file associations I ended up uninstalling power amp and the problem cured itself. Media player grabbed everything back and it and Roxio behaved normally. It seems as if I only have to have poweramp installed for a couple of days, use it a few times, and it grabs control of my drives. After that the other programmes just stop responding as soon as a disc is inserted - they can tell that there is a disc present, they can go online and look it up in their associated database, but otherwise they freeze, and poweramp itself doesnt seem to be able to function properly once this stage is reached and when trying to rip to my drive I'm getting error messages such as "cant open destination folder" or "unable to rip, check settings". If I uninstall and reinstall things work for a while. Any ideas?

            XP Pro. version 5.1, SP1
I do realise, btw, that I probably have an excess of audio software on my system. I want to keep the Roxio bundle because it contains some functions that I particularly like, especially in photo editing. I need Real player to receive streamed material from the BBC - I'm excited to have come across indications on this site that there might be other ways. Mediaplayer "came with the machine" and is familiar to the rest of the family but I'm getting fed up with its constant attempts to go online, and offers to revise my file names etc for me. It doesnt seem to handle tracks outside the artist album structure too happily, and especially with v.9 I sometimes notice slow downs in concurrent activities.
By manipulating the file associations I had managed to get them to co exist peacefully, and I'd like to achieve the same result with poweramp so that I can make some sort of smooth progress towards having things "just so" rather than the trauma of uninstalling the familiar and making a clean start. After all, I still have SP2 to come...

Try Audio CD Input >> Options >> select CD drive and 'Advanced' and set communication to 'NT/2000 built in (limited)'

Thanks - looks good so far, now for the test of time!
Is that alteration akin to 'saying' "dont make yourself the default player"?

No, all options for default player are in 'dAP Install Options' the Associate with dAP and the CD Playing options.

That does seem to have been the solution - several days assorted usage and nothing's got tied in knots this time :smile2:
                    Thanks
