    dAP Slowdown When Ripping

I've moved my machines around physically so can now easily access the CD drive in the music server. I then moved dMC to the music server but I find dAP slows and stutters when rippping.

This is a twin PIII 600 machine so I doubt it's processor; I suspect it's RAM as there's only about 320Mb in it. Given this machine only run dAP and dMC how much memory does it need?

    It's running Win2K Pro SP4 BTW.

when you say you moved things around and you mentioned music server, do you mean you are using networking from one machine to the other to access and convert from primary machine accessing your secondary machine (server)?

if so Narler reported slow problems when networking with dmc/dap. although that was with win98se.

No. I'm using the machine directly. Ripping from my primary machine to the MS over the network works rather well but doesn't give me the benefit of automatically updating MMC on the MS which is why I moved dMC. The slowdown doesn't just happen during the MMC update, it's constant.

this part i am misunderstanding then?

if dmc is on the secondary pc then you are accessing dmc from the primary machine?

dap slows and stutters whilst ripping using dmc?

or is it dmc slowing and stuttering?

Let's start again. Look into my eyes and remove all thoughts of secondary machines from your mind... (aside: Where's the 'mesmerising' smilie?!)

post shuffle, dMC and dAP are on the same machine.

I've increased that to 512Mb with some memory I had lying around but it's made no difference. FWIW the major interference seems to happen during dMC's rendering phase. I think I'll just move dMC back top the other machine as that will get over the problem.

I guess a basic question is should it work? Should dMC and dAP be able to run at the same time?

actaully i only have now just undesrtood what you were saying.

i wouldn't recomend ripping a cd whilst playing music in dap or doing any other task really. i think it can make the rip susseptible to data corruption.

                      but i could be wrong...

I've moved dMC back where it was; 'this' machine. It is currently ripping CDs to RAM and outputting the MP3s to the music server over the network while the music server itself is belting out Dream Theater's Bombay Vindaloo at high volume.

On the machine doing the ripping I'm running this IE task, my OLR is downloading messages from my mailbox and DVD Profiler is updating the DVD list. That's how I've always used dMC with no problems which is why I was so surprised when I hit problems running it alongside dAP. Admittedly the machines are a different spec, 'this' one is a 2.4GHz P4 with a gig of memory and the other is a dual pIII 600 with 512Mb RAM but I'm surprised dAP seems to need so much of it.

It shouldn't be the memory. For the other machine (the sutter one), could you set the dMC Priority down to 'Below Normal' that shouldn't affect dAP.

Now don't tell me, I know that option must be around here somewhere...

And almost as soon as I posted that I found it ! :o

Thanks, that seems to have sorted it apart from when it's adding the track to MMC.
