Direct connection to hifi versus Squeezebox

    Hello all

I run two hifi systems in our house - upstairs and downstairs -
middle price range, nothing really expensive or very high-end,
both with similar Kenwood integrated amps.

    1) upstairs - direct connection from my work computer to amp
    - from Realtek soundcard lineout
    - via 3.5mm jack to red/white RCAs on the amplifier AUX

    2) downstairs - via WLAN and a Squeezebox-3 Classic

I have all my music carefully tagged and well organized.

Upstairs I use dbPowerAmp's Music Collection (MCC).
I just select a track or album and off we go. I really like this.
So long as the files are well tagged, this is clear, simple, and quick.

Downstairs I have to use the Squeezebox menu.
I don't like this at all.
It is muddled and seems to have a mind of its own.
There seems to be no way to simplify and reduce it.
I have to navigate through numerous menu items I never need
to reach the few that I want.

However, I think the sound quality provided by the SB is better
than the direct connection provided by my soundcard.

    Question 1 :
Can someone explain - in simple terms - the difference in sound quality ?
What does the SB have that the soundcard doesn't ?

    Question 2 :
Is there some piece of equipment that I could insert in the upstairs system
that would enhance sound quality in the same way,
i.e. is there an alternative to the Squeezebox ?
Can a really good soundcard provide the same quality ?

    Best regards from Ray

You could buy a better sound card for the PC - m-audio do some good ones.
