    dAP Won't play FLAC files

Is dAP capable of playing FLAC files? I tried installing the FLAC codec from Legacy Central (I have dAP installed in a separate v11.5 folder). When I did this, I received an error message to say that I had a later version of the FLAC codec installed (but it doesn't appear in the "compression" folder of dAP). So, how do I play a .fla file? My first alternative has been to do a conversion from.fla to .wav - but this is a bit cumbersome, to say the least. Thanks for any help forthcoming. - Tony

[Windows XP Sp2 dAP r2, dMC 12.4 Reference (separate folder from dAP installation)].

Go into dMC Configuration (See "Need to find your version?" below for where it is), to the Options Tab, and change the option for FLAC to enable association with fla files. This is not done by default as .fla is also an extension for flash files.

Re: dAP Won't play FLAC files

Thanks, Lt.Data. Followed your instructions, installed the latest FLAC codec from Codec Central (NOT Legacy), and it now shows up in the dMC Configuration menu as a file association after I select it. But it does not change the way Music Player reacts to FLAC files. Right clicking on a FLAC file brings up the "Windows can't open this file" warning - selecting dAP from the drop down menu, and right clicking on said FLAC file brings up the dAP skin - with no file entered. Baffling for me, so I hope you can give me a solution. Thanks again - Tony

After installing the flac legacy codec you will need to launch the File Association shortcut on the Start Menu --> dBpowerAMP --> Configuration --> File Association and associate the Flac files with dAP.

You will have to ensure that you install the legacy flac codec to the same location that you installed dAP and ignore any messsages about removing other versions (i.e. non legacy) of the flac codec.

Re: dAP Won't play FLAC files

I'm at a loss as to what's going on here. I have dMC installed in the "Illustrate" directory, and dAP in a directory named "Illustrate Old" - so, no problems there.
Following instructions given, I have the FLAC codec from Codec Central installed in the "Illustrate" folder, and file associations in dMC have been amended to include .flac and .fla file extensions. Next , I downloaded the FLAC codec from Legacy, and installed it in the "Illustrate Old" directory.

Now, checking the file associations box in dAP shows all the codecs I have installed except the .fla file extension. This codec has not added itself into the dAP file associations window:( So, what is the next step, please? (Any suggestions to not use FLAC will be dutifully ignored (lol)! Thanks again, in advance. I know that with patience, we will achieve a satisfactory solution. - Tony

            Tony-
Do you have a Configuration folder for the Illustrate Old folder/directory? If you do not, try installing dMC 11.5 in the Illustrate Old directory. You can find a downloaod link here:
            http://www.dbpoweramp.com/legacy-compatibility.htm .

I believe this is where you would need to make the adjustment for .fla to be recognized as FLAC.

Making the change in the Configuration for dMC 12+ will not affect dAP as it is independent of the new dMC.

If this does not apply or if it does not help, please let us know.

            Best wishes,
            Bill

I apologize, you misunderstood me. You need the latest FLAC codec from Legacy Codec Central for dAP.

Also, if you, as a test, rename one of your files from .fla to .flac, does dAP play it?

Re: dAP Won't play FLAC files

Lt.Data, thanks for your reply. I have now: Re-installed v11.5 to the Illustrate Old directory. Re-installed the Legacy FLAC codec to the same folder. Checked the configuration for dAP in said folder, and I see that flac.dll appears in the "compression" sub folder. Rebooted. Click on a FLAC file to play - nada, nothing, nowt (as we'd say in Yorks.) - all I get is the windows option drop-down menu. Select dB in that, and it doesn't play, either. And yes, I've checked in the dMC options and ensured that the selection is made for .fla/.flac there, too. Last but not least, renamed a file from .flac to .fla, and that doesn't work either - it still doesn't play!!! (Maybe a musicians strike?!!!!!!!). I must admit to being a bit puzzled. - Tony

So you renamed your .fla files to .flac and tried to play it in dAP and it didn't play? Can you do a Test Conversion on the file in dMC?

Hello again, Lt.Data ! Yup, test conversion no write runs OK, and dMC also converts the files to wave without any argument. Where do we go from here?? Must be something minor and obscure, methinks. - Tony

Re: dAP Won't play FLAC files

Try opening dMC 11.5 configuration (I believe it can be opened from youor Illustrate Old folder, or if you go Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration it will be listed as dMC Configuration rather than dBpowerAMP Configuration-at least that is my set-up although my set-up is a little eccentric). To confirm that this is the correct version (for our purposes) of Configuration, on the first tab where it says versions it will show dMC r11.5.

Now click on Options and confirm that the option to recognize .fla as .flac is activated.
Then look at your list of installed decoder codecs and confirm that the Flac codec is listed. Look at your list of installed encoders and look at the Flac encoder for the version number. I believe it should read: Release 5.3 (using Flac 1.1.2). If this is not shown, uninstall your Flac codec, reboot (might not be necessary, but you never know), and download and install this version of Flac from Legacy Codec Central here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/legacy/codec-central-flac.htm .

Then go back to dMC Configuration for r11.5 and activate the option for .fla to be recognized as .flac.

My guess is that either you have the wrong .flac codec installed in Illustrate Old, or it got corrupted (if you had accidentally installed the Flac codec for dMC r12+ in that folder), or that you have not activated the option to read .fla for .flac in the correct Configuration for dAP.

If none of these 3 things is wrong, then please let us know.

Bill, thanks for the post. Checked everything as you suggested, and everything seems to be as described. But still no joy! There's only one thing that seems (to me, at least) a bit odd, and that is the FLAC files I downloaded are shown in the tag mouseover as being encoded in FLAC 1.1.4. 20070213. Should this make any difference? - Tony

As a follow-up on the immediately previous post - I re-edited one of the files so that it now shows as being edited in FLAC 1.1.2 - but it didn't make any difference! -Tony

Well, finally got it working! Had to right click on a .flac file, select 'open with' from the windows "can't open this file" drop down menu, select dAP audio player, then "always open with this......" and it worked. This after reinstalling dAP r2, and updating dMC to 12.4 Reference (registered). I can't find out whether my dAP is my registered version or not. A successful hint would be greatly appreciated, as indeed has been all the foregoing assistance. Where in the world would you ever find a better application, or better online assistance, than this ? Don't waste time looking. Thanks again, Lt.Data and Wayne for your efforts. Tony
