Follow-up post. Re DMC, converting an 8-bit, 22050Hz, mono file in one step works fine for an original file size of 35KB but not for one of 30KB. So somewhere between 35 and 30 is where the problem arises.
Christina's 2-step process works down to at least 25KB but I have not tested at smaller sizes. An alternative which works for down to at least 25KB, is to convert by playing/recording (to 16-bit, 44100Hz, stereo file at the same time, using DMC Auxilliary Iinput or any other recording program which supports "What-U-Hear" recording.
Whether to problem converting small files is unique to DMC, I have not yet determined....but I suspect not. Will let you know, provided I can locate another free convertion program!
