    What are you using?

Right-click Volume icon > Open Volume Controls > OPtions > Properties > Recording > select all the available input sources > OK > Select Line-in or Aux-in, uncheck all others. Or you can use Stereo Mix for input, but make sure other sources of audio (Outlook Express, messengers which all can produce various sounds) are all closed.

Cue in your tape to the spot from which you want to record and pause it.

Start dMC Auxiliary Input, select the options for recording. Best to record to 16-bit PCM 44.1KHz stereo wav (uncompressed). Hit Record and then click on red dot. Immediately release the pause button on the cassette player to let it play.

You should see activity in the recording window (if it got minimized restore it to the screen).

When the song is over, hit that red button again which will stop the recording. After a few seconds the wav file would have been saved.
the defualt name is __track01.wav and it will end up in c:\converted music unless you changed that location or name beforehand.

To play back your wave, go back through volume controls and select Playback options this time. Make sure nothing is muted except for microphone.

Then play the wav file in your favorite player.

Quality considerations are unrelated to this process itself. Your cassette player may need a pre-amp, you may need to clean up the recording if it has too much hiss, etc.
