XP SP 2 & CD Rip crashes my PC!

    Hello...

I use the cd rip included with dbpoweramp. I like it very much, but now after SP2, it reboots my pc. Sometimes it works, other times my screen turns black and my pc reboots. I unisntalled the program, dl'ed the newest vers. and tried again. Same problem, i then tried another program "audiograb", which i think isn't as good as the dbpower... But the same problem occured here, but not as often.
WinXP never crashes during ripping, mostly if i press a button in my program, like, option, freedb etc.

Else than this problem, my machine runs 100% stable. I have no virus og spyware etc on my pc...

I know the problem isn't your program, but i thought someone might know a solution...

The most important parts of my pc:
    P4 3GHz HT
    Abit IC7MAX3
    1,5 GB pc 3200 ram
    2*160 gb sata samsung hdd
MSI DVD writer and a Samsung DVD reader

Oh by the way, my pc seems to run more stable if i before starting the ripping program eject the cdtray and first close it after the program is loaded. It often crashes right when the cdtray incl. a cd is... ermmm... "loaded in". But only in my ripping progs...

    This is weird IMO...

Your uninstall procedure should have worked. But just to be on safe side, try uninstalling Music Converter and all of your dB codecs (through Control Panel>Add/Remove programs), remove their registry entry (Start>Run, type in regedit, browse the file tree on the left to H_KEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Illustrate-delete the Illustrate folder) exit regedit, restart your system, and reinstall Music Converter, your codecs and any other dB programs (Auxilary Input, File Selecter, Audio Player, Power Pack, CD Writer, Sveta) you have installed.

Should this not work, please let us know.
    Best wishes,
    Bill Mikkelsen

Nothing (programs) should be able to do that to your PC, it sounds like a hardware / device driver problem. First check that the computer is not overheating.

That is extreemly weird cos i have XP SP2 and all dBpowerAMP progs. has been running absolutely fine for ages. As SPOON said - it's probably a device/driver problem

Personally, I'm running SP2 without any ill effects, so it sounds like you are having a device/driver problem, as the above people said.

First and foremost, does your computer crash when you play some of the newer games also? Does it crash during any other system-intensive process? If it does or acts oddly (crashing, freezing, etc.) during these events, then it sounds like you have a problem with heat. To test this, take the side cover off of your computer. Check to make sure all of your system fans are turning and not making any odd noises. If they are operating normally, put a floor fan next to the case blowing in and turn it on medium. Try ripping a CD again. If it still crashes, then it's a setting. If it does not, then the problem is heat. You then need to figure out a better way of moving air through your case.

Since it sounds like the problem isn't caused by any particular ripping application, let's check your general system settings.
First, do you have digital audio enabled? In the control panel, open System properties, click the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. Click the plus sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives and double-click the optical drive. Click the Properties tab and make sure "Enable Digital audio for this CD-ROM device" is checked. Click OK
Next, look in the Device manager for any conflicts represented by an exclamation point.
Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Click on Primary Channel first, then Secondary Channel afterwards, as the instructions are the same. Click the Advanced Settings tab, then make sure both devices are set to "DMA if applicable." Click OK.

If those settings are fine, then the problem might be caused by a different system setting. After uninstalling dbPowerAmp and all associated items, reinstall them. Check your HDD (hard drive disk) for errors by right-clicking on the drive in My Computer and going to properties. Click the Tools tab, then Click the "Check Now" box next to Error-checking. Check the first box and, if you want to though it will take longer, check the second box also. Click Start. It will probably pop up a box asking if it can do this after the next restart. Click yes.
Next, check to see if your disc is badly fragmented. While fragmention affects XP less than other operating systems, it can affect XP if the disk is badly fragmented. Go back to the Tools tab on your HDD's properties, and click the "Check Now" box next to Defragmentation. Click analyze. When it's finished, a dialog box will pop-up. Look for "Fragmentation" and a percent. You should also see "File Fragmentation" and "Data Fragmentation". If these numbers are over about 20%, then defragment the hard drive. Try ripping again after it finishes.

Download the latest drivers for your motherboard, normally located at the manufacturer of the computer. If you built your computer, check the motherboard manufacturer's webiste.

If ripping still fails, then the problem lies elsewhere. If you know what your doing, make sure all of your BIOS settings are correct. If you have never went into the BIOS, get a friend who has and have him check, as the wrong setting in the BIOS can result in a non-booting computer or damaged hardware.

If you have any questions about any of these directions, just reply here and we will try to clear them up. Sorry if I spoke too far above/below your level of knowledge. I tried to make it as simple as I could. Here's hoping.
