Volume Normalize or add DSP effect(s) WITHOUT re-encoding

Hello everybody.

Is it possible to normalize my (lossless: FLAC, WAV, etc.) files without re-encoding?
I don't see an option that allows to add a DSP effect (like volume normalize) without specifying an encoder.

Currently I am preparing an SD card for my Signature Walkman which should contain normalized (volume) audio to avoid volume jumps while listening.
Since it is a 512 GB SD card which I will fill I am also looking for a batch normalization of multiple files in several folders and subfolders.

I have the latest DMC Reference (don't know if there are plugins missing, I downloaded the installer and nothing more).

Any help or advice appreciated.

You would have to re-encode, note you should keep the original un modified files, and create a sub-set for the walkman which are volume normalized.

Thanks! Yes, I always keep the original files.
So there is no option without re-encoding, right?
What about detecting the current format (Codec, Compression, Bitrate, etc.) and then re-encoding with the exact same setting?
Is that possible?

As the source is lossless, create one encoding say flac for the player.

alright, thanks. I'll populate the SD card first and then "batch convert" the files.

Edit: Do you know if the Sony NW-WM1Z supports "Replay Gain"? If not, which normalization algorithm do you recommend? And should I go for track or album normalization?
(For example, the song "Twist In My Sobriety" by Tanita Tikaram on the album "Ancient Heart" sounds way more quieter than all other songs on the album.)

Hello Spoon,

I have just installed TuneFusion (Trial) and want to use it.
What setting do you recommend for my Walkman? "Removable disk"?
It has internal memory (256GB) and inserted SD card (500GB) and both can be mounted as single drive (with a random letter or fixed letter set up with the software "USB safely remove")

I have a similar situation to the OP's. I recently installed a new head unit in my car and have some issues that I didn't have on my older unit. When I insert the USB flash drive to play my files (a mix of mp3's and FLAC), a number of the "albums" (folders) will not play with enough volume, even with the volume on my head unit completely turned up. I didn't have this issue on the unit which I replaced.

It seems as if PeteWright will be re-encoding only lossless files - do I need to do a separate batch conversion run for each (i.e., one for the FLAC and a separate one for the mp3)?

Any other insight would be greatly welcomed.

UPDATE: After following the directions in this thread, I believe I was able to determine how to use Batch Converter to normalize the volume on my all of my files. I'm guessing I didn't need to because both the drive with the original files and the drive with the normalized files sound the same to me - I couldn't perceive any difference between them.

I'm back. I have tried Tune Fusion and it seems to be pretty good at what it was made for, but I still miss the "lossless normalization" (no re-encoding) on files like mp3.

How comes that a powerful tool like dBpoweramp can't handle that?

There are at least two tools that can adjust the volume gain without re-encoding:

1. mp3gain
2. mp3DirectCut

They do so by shifting the total gain of an audio file (mp3) by steps of 1.5 decibels up or down which is "mathematically" lossless. And that's actually all I need.

I only want to "normalize" my mp3 file collection, all other formats (FLAC, WAV, etc.) will be handled by dBpoweramp.


Is there any chance that this "feature" will once be available on DMC? Or is there another workaround for that particular task?

It is unlikely as such method is specific only to mp3
