    1) It must have been the filename which matched somehow.
    2) No, by default all drives have this enabled, switching it off can break apps. It is how Unicode is supported with encoders which are not Unicode compatible.

      OK thank you for that. Just so you know, I have never disabled short filenames. This, my backup PC and my laptop all have NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation=2. I set it to 0. Also I cannot believe we would ask a non-technical person to have to go into the registry and change things.

        A value of 2 means it is controlled on a per volume basis, which is default and correct. FSUTIL can be used to enable or disable a single volume, by default it is enabled for all drives and volumes.
