Best options for conversion to iPod?

    Hello all,
I am looking for advice and suggestions about converting some of my FLAC files to AAC for use on my iPod. I am wondering what your experience tells you? What is good and what is bad.

I should say that I do not use my iPod for serious listening. My iPod is mainly used on public transport as background music while reading or doing other tasks. The highest quality possible is not that important since the noise levels on public transport would typically be very high anyway.

I have followed the instructions and have the m4a and Nero ACC codecs installed. Now I am ready to start converting but I see many options and do not fully understand the impact on the resulting file.

All my other ACC files, converted with iTunes, seem to be ACC (LC), 16 bits, with a 128 bit rate. I gleaned this information from the actual files in my iTunes library and therefor on my iPod today.

I can not see from the existing ACC files if they are VBR, ABR, or CBR.

I am wondering what you are doing when you convert to ACC for an iPod.
    What do you recommend?
    What should I avoid?

Do you convert to VBR, ABR, or CBR?
    What bitrate do you use?
What value do you use for bits? How do you set this value?
Do you change the encoder to 'Force LC ACC' or leave it as '(no forced profile)'?
Do you use DSP effects? Which ones? What values? Why?
How do you get album art into iTunes?

If I want the same quality as the existing files which options should I use?

Any advice or suggestions from your experience would be most welcome.

    Thank you,
    Chip

    VBR 250kbps would be good.

Do not use a forced profile. iTunes should read the art from the file if it is embedded.

Re: Best options for conversion to iPod?

      Hello,
I must be doing something wrong but I do not know what it is??

I am trying to convert several hundred FLAC files to ACC for my iPod Nano.
The Apple web site says the Nano can support bit rates up to 320.

I ran the Batch Convert tool to convert the files.
      I selected
      Converting To: m4a Nero (ACC)
      Target: Quality (VBR)
Quality .65 (estimated bit rate: 250 Kbps) - selected with slider
      Encoder >> (no forced profile)

When I convert the FLAC files more than half have a bit rate greater than 320 Kbps and are refused by my iPod.

Now I have a mix of ACC files. Some are less than 320 Kbps and will play, many others are greater than 320 Kbps and will not even load on my iPod. When I tried to load the files I received error messages telling me my iPod does not support that bit rate.

I just tried to convert one of the files again.
It starts out as a FLAC file with Sample Rate 96 Khz, Sample Size 24 bit, Bit Rate 4608 kbps (DVD), and Encoder FLAC.
After conversion to VBR 250kbps I end up with Sample Rate 96 KHz, Sample Size 16 bit, Bit Rate 336 kbps, and Encoder ACC (LC).

What do I need to do to get the FLAC files converted for my iPod?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
      Chip

You would have to use the CBR mode, as VBR is allowed to free range.

          Hello,
Now I have changed the Bit Rate to CBR 256 and I get an error that tells me the Sample Rate is not supported.
Is it possible to change the Sample Rate when converting to ACC?

It was probably this96khz which is causing the iPod not to play bbt, insert the dsp effect resample to 44.1khz and try again to create aac files
