Is Ape direct to flac conversion loseless

I have some Ape music I'd like to convert to flac. I know if I convert ape to wav then wav to flac I will not lose any quality in the conversion but i will lose the tags. If I do a straight ape to flac conversion which seems to maintain the tags will it lose any quality or is it smart enough to convert to wav first?

There will be no loss of quality when converting between lossless formats like ape and flac.
