We use our own compile of Lame, different compilers give very slight differences to lame (use Microsoft and Intel and GCC and all will not produce identical files, it is how floating point in lame works). This also accounts for speed differences.

If you want to use the lame.exe then use the cli, we have our own compile because we can put floating point data straight into lame, the lame.exe cannot.

I understand what you are saying here but could you go into a bit more detail as to how the internal lame encoding works when ripping directly a whole CD. I say ripping directly because when doing this and inspecting the lame tags with LameTagGUI I get this for track X.

Encoder delay: 576 samples
Padded at end: 0 samples
Music length: 3,153,416 bytes.

If however I first rip to another lossless format and then do the conversion as a seperate step I get the following for track X:

Encoder delay: 576 samples
Padded at end: 1,764 samples
Music length: 3,155,270 bytes

Now what's interesting is that do the same rip using EAC and the lame exe I get the same:

Encoder delay: 576 samples
Padded at end: 1,764 samples
Music length: 3,155,270 bytes

The reason I started looking into this was because I wondered if dBpowerAMP did anything similar to the "synchronise between tracks" feature in EAC.

So will dMc
Target Quality (VBR) + -V 0 "extreme" + Encoding: Slow (High Quality)
result in
"LAME -V0 --vbr-new"?

Is it the same to all intents and purposes?

Yes, all VBR settings are the --vbr-new, I'm not sure how the encoding setting affects the command-line, though.

If you are using r12.1, it says "--vbr-new".

Thanks, I just upgraded to 12.1 and now I see it!
So what difference does "Encoding: slow/normal/fast" make, within "-v0 --vbr-new"?
