    R12 Reference SCSI problem

I posted this thread a couple of days ago. I thought there was a problem with AccurateRip, but it turns out that the problem lies in how R12 handles SCSI CD-ROM access. I have an external Plextor PX-40TS (fw 1.14) on an Adaptec CardBus 1480 SCSI-controller on my laptop. In PlexTools everything looks fine, and I'm able to rip audio without any problems. However, R12 CD Ripper has huge problems accessing my CD-ROM drive. When I try to rip, it reports an error on each track:

    Code:
    Error ripping to Wave, 'Track 1' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\chrisha\My Documents\My Music\Amy Winehouse\Amy Winehouse - Back To Black - 01 - Rehab.wav'
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 75 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 16196) [clRipperSecure::Rip]
The same problems arises no matter which communication method I use. I have tried both SCSI Pass Through and Adaptec ASPI layer release 4.6. I have checked my ASPI install with Adaptec ASPI Version Checker. Here is the output:

    Code:
         LOG0143: *****************************************************************
         LOG0144: Starting ADAPTEC-ASPI-VERSION-CHECKER installer on Thu Mar 01 13:12:42 2007

LOG0218: Closing installer log on Thu Mar 01 13:12:42 2007
         LOG0219: *****************************************************************
Anyone knows why this problem arises? CD-ROM access seems to work fine in Windows Explorer, Exact Audio Copy and PlexTools Professional.

    Re: R12 Reference SCSI problem

I found this thread: Something wrong here, my Plextor SCSI drive won't find a Key Disc

    In post #6 Spoons says:

Try ripping a track on the plextor, I think R12 does not support it as it requires an old read command.
    Is this the case?

Have you tried Windows Internal communication method?

No. I'm on a weekend trip and I don't have access to my CD-gear right now. Will test it when I come home and report back.

But won't using Windows Internal communication disable Secure Ripping?

Tried Windows Internal communication method, and got the exact same error messages. Double checked with EAC, and there the audio CDs rip just fine...

These drives need an older read command, this will appear in R13.

Yay, I can't wait. Thanks Spoon.

Didn't I also read somewhere that we would be able to verify individual ripped tracks to the AccurateRip database at some point? I have two 200gb hard drives filled with old rips that I did (track-by-track), and would really like to not have to re-rip the entire bunch. Someone said it is possible on the hydrogenaudio forums, but you had to rip as an image initially to do that. Is this something you will have to do from within dBpowerAMP? Or did I hear incorrectly?

One last thing, since the Plextor 230A drive no longer seems to be available anywhere online, is there a new successor that can be dubbed the champion of accurate & difficult extraction? (I'm trying to get a friend setup with a good drive & dBpowerAMP)

              Thanks, Dave

Individual tracks are difficult unless they have the CD TOC to generate the AccurateRip track ident.

I do not have any recommendations of cd drives, perhaps an old 230a off ebay?

R13 is probably a year or more off, unfortunately.

I found several Plextor PX-40TS on eBay. I even found some new (unused!) external drives sold by 'nordfoto-versand'. Got hold of two of them, and hooked them up with an Adaptec 1480 Ultra SCSI controller on my laptop. Works like a charm, and not very expensive. If you have a desktop, it will be even cheaper, since you will get away with a cheaper internal PCI scsi controller.

I've also heard that the Plextor PX-760 DVD burner is an ok drive for audio ripping. I actually bought one, but had huge problems getting it to work in an external IDE-to-USB2 enclosure, so I sold it. But if used in a desktop PC, you won't have any problems of that sort.

Is it possible to release a R12 build with the older read commands included...? A year is a long time to wait for CD ripping...

I'd like to get a reference license, but without support for the PX-40TS and no included update to R13 there is no deal.

Does anyone know which command set these plextors work on, is it Read(10)?
