If anyone can have say 3 files and a process which will crash explorer (after a clean boot), it would help track this down (I do not get it on Vista). My email:
In my experience you can take any mp3, flac or ape-file (those 3 formats I've tested)
Process:
After a reboot, open windows explorer, rightclick on a file, choose Edit ID-tag, change p.e. title and click ok. Within 2 or 3 edits the explorer crashes (the change is saved). Even changing nothing at all will crash explorer, it takes just a little bit longer to crash.
I tested it on a fresh windows XP Pro install with sp2 and updates till december 2006. Only video and sound drivers were installed.
I tested it on local HD and via network, in both cases Explorer crashed.
I am also getting this on Vista Ultimate x64. After a few tag edits editing tags (either via right click | properties | ID-Tag or right click | Edit ID-Tag) crashes explorer.
Note that the tags actually do get changed before the crash.
