New apple lossless (mp4 codec) is odd

I used the previous version of the mp3 to m4a codec to create ringtones for my sprint phone as that seemed to be the only thing that worked.

I'll clarify a bit... With the previous codec for converting mp3 to m4a, I'd convert the sound bit that I'd made from mp3 to m4a resulting in little change of size and full compatibility with my phone. When I updated, it seemed to rid of my usual "to m4a" option and replaced it with Apple Lossless, which I am not familiar with in the slightest.
Or at least I don't think I am. So I went about like usual and converted the 450 kb 128kbps file to apple lossless...and found that the new converted size was well in excess of 3000 kb.
There are no settings for me to change with the new apple lossless and the nero aac doesn't work for me. So I would just like to know if there is some way I can find the old codec, revert to that and go about like normal.

Sorry if I sound like a total boob, I was just used to it working like normal and now it doesn't lol.

Mp3 sizes are determined 100 by bitrates, try a smaller bitrate.

Well you see, that is just the thing... it doesn't give me any option to change settings on the apple lossless. When I choose to convert to said format, it says " Apple Lossless Converter, 16 bit stereo and mono supported" and thats it. It gives me no option (that I can find) to make adjustments. There is usually the normal slider bar or a button but..nothing here.

Well, that is because you are using Apple Lossless. I have never heard of a phone that can play Apple Lossless files. I think you should be using the Nero AAC codec to be producing files that can be played on your phone.

With the old codec, I would convert the mp3 file to M4A, my phone plays m4a files for ringtones and mp3 for just plain music. They don't interchange unfortunately. The old codec allowed me to convert an mp3 to m4a, the only m4a option I have on here now with the new codec is the apple lossless. The nero AAC doesn't work for my converter for some reason and reguardless, my phone doesn't take AAC's as ringtones. I was just wondering if there was any way I could find the old codec so I could go on like normal.

            You don't have m4a (FAAC CLI) ?

The Nero AAC codec, by default, encodes to .m4a. Also, did you follow the instructions in the Nero help file and download the encoder .exe's?

Problem solved! It took a little doing and a small headache on my part (my own fault) but all seems to be back to how it should be. I guess I need to play closer attention to fine print and so forth. Much appreciation for the assistance!
