I am trying to convert a file, but I get a mess to go to Codec central and download the codec for .avi, but there isn't any. The file I am trying to convert is a winamp file.

dMC doesn't convert video, except to conver the audio in a .wmv file. You will have to use either Auxiliary Input (instructions below) or a program such as VirtuaDub to strip the audio from the video. -

And "Winamp file" is kind of vague. Winamp likes to associate all media files as simply "Winamp files". To find out what's really in there, hit Alt 3 while Winamp is open to find out the real info on your AVI files.Comment

use the directshow decoder plugin
add "avi" to the extention listComment
