I'm now a paid customer for ripping on my Mac, as I thought I needed to pay and register to get the thing to work, but the app seems to freeze-up when I put a CD in the drive. I get the message "Retrieving intelligent metadata from AMG [done: GD3, MusicBrainz, freedb] Please wait..." and then I wait and wait and wait and nothing happens. Not good. Please advise or refund the charge to my credit card. Thank you.

Second, try accessing the metadata providers, without AMG selected. What happens?
... also, is CDRipper hanging (crashing), or is it just waiting? -

Uncheck AMG and see how it is for you, for a test.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
Sorry, but I don't see how to uncheck AMG, as the "Meta" box is greyed-out and inaccessible until I put a CD into the drive. In putting the CD into the drive (which automatically open iTunes, which I close out of), I get the "please wait" message as the ripper tries to access all the sources of metadata and nothing happens, like it is frozen. Five or more minutes goes by and nothing is happening. Very frustrating. I thought (hoped) the bugs had been worked out by now with the Mac version, as I never had such problems back when I had a PC and was using the PC version. Thanks in advance, however, for any advise or tips anyone can provide to resolving this problem.Comment

Thanks for your reply, mville, and please seen my response to Spoon's suggestion below. This noob needs it spelled-out for him exactly how to access and uncheck any particular metadata providers. Also, as to whether the ripper is hanging, crashing, or just waiting, I'm not sure I know the difference, as nothing is happening. I've tried this with several different CDs and the result is the same: the ripper is not ripping, but waiting (or has gotten hung-up or crashed).Comment

... Just a thought, on a windows PC the Meta options, including the AMG option, are set in the registry, so, with a registry tweak it can be set manually. If it is possible to find where on a Mac this option is stored, it may be possible to set it externally to CDRipper. It does seem that connecting to certain online metadata databases causes many problems like the one described here.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
Thanks again, mville, but I'm at a loss as to where such a "registry tweak" can be found on my Mac. Hopefully, Spoon or someone will chime in with other options for me to solve this problem.Comment

Disconnect your computer from the internet, then insert the CD, and you will be able to access the menu.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
Spoon, I did as you suggested and was able to uncheck AMG from the Meta options after disconnecting my router. However, when I reconnected to the Internet, opened the ripper and inserted a CD, I had the same result as mentioned in my earlier posts: stuck ripper, nothing happening, asking me to wait forever. And the "waiting message" still said it was searching for metadata from AMG (among the other sources), and the "ID Tag/Meta" box, like that for the "Eject" box, was again greyed-out. It's like it is frozen at this step and obviously not successful in finding any metadata. Any other suggestions? And please be very specific with any recommended steps as I am merely a music lover but admit to being clueless about computers. Thanks.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
Thanks for your feedback.
It is a confirmed bug that manually unchecked metadata providers (such as AMG) become checked again after reopening the CD ripper; the next update will fix this.
As for why AMG is locking up and never finishing, I'm looking into it. What is the exact message you're seeing? Is it just AMG that never completes the lookup or are there others always listed?
If you want to keep dBpoweramp from attempting to automatically retrieve metadata - which obviously isn't working for you - you can just prevent dBpoweramp from accessing the internet without unplugging your machine entirely. Go to dBpoweramp launcher window => Configure => Internet and uncheck "allow dBpoweramp to access internet".Last edited by PeterP; November 16, 2015, 02:58 PM.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
Thanks for the help, Peter.
Here's the exact message I'm seeing: "Retrieving intelligent metadata from: AMG [done: GD3, MusicBrainz, freedb] Please wait..."
Thanks also for the tips to prevent dBpoweramp from accessing the internet, but I'm sure you'll understand that as a paying customer I want to take advantage of the full suite of ripper offerings to include access to metadata for album art, track listings, etc. By the way, I loved using the ripper on my HP notebook (and never had such problems with the PC version) but, alas, have passed that notebook down to my young niece for school use, so now I am "Mac-only".
Any other ideas or info you need from me?Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
So it is just AMG lookup that gets stuck, thanks for the information, this is precisely what I needed to know. I'll get back to you when a fixed version of dBpoweramp is available.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
Beta update for you:
- Meta lookups are now cancellable
- Unchecked meta providers no longer come back after reopening CD ripper, so if just AMG somehow doesn't work for you, you can disable it
I'd like you to try retrieving metadata again - see if AMG returns data or gets stuck like it did before. If it gets stuck, please click 'cancel', then go to dBpoweramp launcher window, Configure, Music Converter tab, "Save configuration snapshot", then mail the file it created to peter@dbpoweramp.com - it will hopefully give me enough information to figure out why AMG isn't working for you.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
PeterP,
I'm having the same issue as AudioMark. The program is stuck on "Retrieving intelligent metadata from: AMG [done: GD3, MusicBrainz, freedb] Please wait..." I'm using a Macbook Pro 2015 w/ El Capitan. Is the 15.4 update available for all...? Thanks for your help.Comment

Re: Spoon, please help! Ripping hung up at Metadata retrieval stage.
The beta update is available to everyone.
Beta forum thread.
If you're experiencing the stuck AMG bug, you should definitely get it - and if you can, follow the steps described in my previous post and send me a configuration dump for analysis.Comment
