I'll try uninstalling zonealarm and take the opportunity to upgrade at the same time.
In between I'll see if my metadata comes back.
My son's computer had a program that wasn't happy unless it was in place BEFORE zonealarm got installed.
Zonealarm used to be better than this back in the day

Just a final note on this thread to say that metadata is now working despite the previous efforts of zonealarm to annoy me.
What would be very helpful is if programs were able to help more in this area
