I have noticed that the forum or dbpoweramp (?) does does seem to like Optiarc ODDs. Optiarc have now been sold to Philips/ Lite-on so the Optiarc models are obsolete.
Having built a new PC for audio, and starting re-ripping to a 500Gb SSD using an older (well used) cheap (~£10) 2011 Optiarc ODD, I then wondered if anything better could be bought. A search found that the more expensive (£37) Optiarc 5280S-CB-PLUS has claims to higher quality: Japanese (Sony?) design, better components… So I bought one not expecting it to be better or even much different. I also compared the sound to that from a Pioneer 2011 BD writer (lightly used). However, it is gives a very different sound to both the older ODDs.
The sound from 5280S seems more pure, fuller and it gives a better grip/space. Now with computer audio someone told me this may be introduced noise and jitter (like found with not sorting the usb like to DAC. I am now listening using a SoTM card. The 5280S appears to “rattle” more smoothly when running fast!?
I see that one person posting did mention getting an Optiarc 5280S above. So what is the learned opinion on this please?
Also I have tried ripping fastest and slow (4X) but cannot hear much if any difference. Again, what is learned opinion on this please?
