compilations in 1 folder & still list each tracks band/performer

I know this topic has been covered in various ways as I've just read numerous posts similar to the subject. Problem for me is that I haven't found an exact solution for my issue or, if I did, I didn't recognize it as one. This is mostly due to the coding aspect of of the program.

Ihave many Various Artists compilation cds. I simply want each albumto go into a "Compilations" folder. Then each cd in it's own folder "Sounds of the 70s". Lastly I'd like each track to list the Artist or Band name. That way when playing or looking thru each compilation I can see what the Artist is for each track. Right now separate folders are being created in individual artist folders seperating all tracks.

Thhanks in advance for any direction. But if it solution requires specific code be written & placed pls be very specific!

What I did was create a profile for various artist compliations. Under "Path" it uses a specific folder ("Compilations" in your case), then under "Naming", it uses [album]\[artist] - [title] to give each album its own folder, then name the files with the artist and song title. You just have to remember to switch back and forth between this profile and your regular one for single-artist albums.

I use this as my dynamic naming string in the ripper/converter. This automatically puts my various artists CD in a folder called COMPILATIONS and puts the other CDs in separate artist/album folders (and if any album has multiple disks, it creates a disk1, disk2, etc. subdirectory under the album directory):

      [IFCOMP]Compilations\[album] [IFMULTI] \Disc [disc][]\[track]-[title]-[artist][][IF!COMP][artist]\[album][IFMULTI] \Disc [disc][]\[track]-[title][]

Thanks to both of you Ed & garym, for responding. Both solutions seem interesting & I'd like to try both to see the results of each to determine what may work best for me.

Only trouble is, I have no idea where to go in the program or how to make the code adjustments you both speak of. Obviously I simply need to cut & paste the code but .....

        Thank you.

easier than it may appear. Open the CD ripper (as if you're going to rip a CD. In the lower left corner you see your profile, rip to, path, naming. On the "naming" row, to the right of the row, hit SET. When the popup opens, the naming row has some similar code in it. Delete this, and then copy and paste the line I gave you above (including the '[]" at the very end, you can then even click on "show example as comp CD" "show example as multidisk" etc. to see how it will look. Then hit OK at the bottom of your popup screen. I set this up once and haven't changed it for years!

It usually is....& I get around very well on the many programs & equipment I use but am not always successful with trial & error.

This is great! I now see where I can make this new profile & simply switch to it while ripping compilations, then revert back to my regular CD rip profile.

Thank you Very much! Excited again!!

Over the past 6 months I've been working on ripping my collection of 2500 + discs and am nearly complete...now just getting to the comps.

garym....I just realized your code does both; comps & regular albums. It treats each differently automatically. Even better. But, If I understand your original reply, with multi-disk albums it creates seperate folders for Disc 1, Disc 2, etc. Is this correct? I prefer to have all my multidisc albums in ONE album folder.....they are just labled on each files whether they're from disc one or two. Would you pls change the code so that it does this? Or am I now becoming a pain?!

I'll get back to you tomorrow. when you say you want multidsik in one foler but the files labeled, exactly how do you want you files labeled, something like:

                01-Come Together - Disk 1.flac

                1-01-Come Together.flac
                ...
                2-01-trackname.flac
                ....
                3-01-trackname.flac

(above would be a multidisk set with 3 disks.

That certainly seems good. Not sure exactly how my Multidiscs files are labeled now.....along the way I made some adjustment that does put all disks into one primary album folder. It was somewhere in the upper left "options" settings....

I currently use dynamic folders in the encoder settings... [artist]\[album]\[title]

If I keep this in the encoder, place your code in the profile I should get the results I am looking for. I am assuming alot, I know!! I will be testing it soon as soon as i leave the office. I do appreciate your help.

Re: compilations in 1 folder & still list each tracks band/performer

copy and paste this into your dynamic naming.

                    [IFCOMP]Compilations\[album]\[IFMULTI] \[disc].[][track]-[title]-[artist][][IF!COMP][artist]\[album]\[IFMULTI]\[disc][].[track]-[title][]

Once pasted in, on the SET page, you can tick the boxes to see how things will be written as compilations, multidisks, or single artist disks. This should all be automatic. If you prefer you Compilations to be under a different named directory (e.g., Various Artists), simply replace the word "Compilations" with "Various Artists"

                    To summarize:

Single artist CDs will show up as:

                    The Beatles\Abbey Road\01-Something

Compilation CDs will show up as:

Compilations\The Big Chill\01-I Heard it Through the Grapevine-Marvin Gaye

In both cases above, if the CD is from a multidisk set, the track number will instead be:

                    1.01, 1.02, 1.03...2.01, 2.02, 2.03,...., 3.01, 3.02, 3.03, etc.

This way within the multidisk album subdirectory, things will sort in disk/track order in things like windows explorer.

NOTE: obviously, I'm assuming that when you rip the disk, you have it assign a disk number tag when it is mulidisk and you tick the compilations box when it is a compilation.

Garym, this works great. My focus is on multi disc cd's. However, it looks like I still get two folders, one for disc 1 and one for disc two. However, they are numbered appropriately. 1.01 etc. in disc one folder and 2.01 etc in second folder. That alone is worth it to me. Right now I just cut and paste from one folder to the to the other folder and relabel disc 1 and 2. However, I got the sense from above this dynamic naming protocol was intended to drop multi-discs into a single folder? If not, it works fine as is.

I listen to my music through logitech server - so no reason to have more than one folder for multi disc albums. Many thanks for your efforts.

Yes, it drops each disk into a subfolder under album (disk 1, disk 2, etc.). But does name them correctly. I do this on purpose. I want to clearly see which tracks on which disk in the folder/file arrangement. Plus I keep the ripping log from dbpa within the folder (and this is per disk). I too do all my playing through logitech media server and many squeezeboxes. It handles separate subfolders for disks just fine. I just select the LMS option of treating multidisk sets as a single album within LMS.
