    AccurateRip key discs and VirtualBox

I am busy trying to get dbPowerAmp working properly in a VirtualBox WinXP image, running on OSX.

It is all working well, apart from the fact that I can't get AccurateRip configured. I installed dbPowerAmp and fed it the dozen CDs that happened to be sitting on my desk.

VirtualBox presents the CD drive as "VBOX - CD-ROM", rather than passing through the actual name of the real drive. I'm guessing this causes dbPA to need to get three good key discs ?

Within those first few discs it found two key discs that it could use, got the same offset for both of them and things were looking promising. I then fed it another couple of dozen discs, but kept getting the dreaded:

    Code:
"This Key Disc cannot be used for offset detection it does not match the AccurateRip stored disc, or your drive does not exist in AccurateRip and this disc has multiple pressings stored. Please try a different Key Disc."
After feeding it 50+ discs with the same result (most of them were key discs), I was beginning to suspect that something was wrong. So I uninstalled dbPA and started again.

I fed it the same dozen CDs that I started with, but this time it didn't accept any of them acceptable, showing the dreaded message for all of them.

I have now fed it another 60 or so discs, every time getting the message for ones that are key discs. Is it worth me sitting here feeding it the rest of my music collection or is it likely that something is actually broken ?

Has anyone else succeeded in getting AccurateRip working in VBox ?

I don't know if it is useful or not, but this was the content of my offset log before I reinstalled:

Re: AccurateRip key discs and VirtualBox

I've used the disc ids from the log to work out which two discs it was that worked the first time.

I've deleted the AccurateRip caches and reinserted those two discs again. But I still get the "multiple pressings" message

Re: AccurateRip key discs and VirtualBox

        I've had some success...

I realised that when I had the two successful discs, I had set the drive access to Windows Internal rather than SCSI Pass Through. I set it back to Windows Internal and sure enough those two discs were again recognised as unique pressings.

I fed it another dozen discs and managed to get AccurateRip configured. Yah.

I'd obviously prefer to use SCSI Pass Through, but I guess beggars can't be choosers (I did try setting it back to SCSI Pass Through and ripping, but it must be getting different offsets or something as it was failing to match the AccurateRip CRCs).

Using Windows Internal does have another annoying "feature". For some reason it tried to repeatedly eject the disc for a few seconds after it has been ejected.

Re: AccurateRip key discs and VirtualBox

Hopefully someone will answer my question when appending to an old thread.

I'm trying to run dBpoweramp CD Ripper Reference 16.1 with AccurateRip on a laptop with
          - Linux Mint 18 (latest),
          - running the Oracle VirtualBox 5.0.24 (latest in Linux Mint repository) in order to
          - run a sandboxed Windows 10 64-bit Professional.

All software installations went well. However, I can't get dBpoweramp CD Ripper to set up AccurateRip, since - as described in the older post above - my CD ROM (actually a DVD read/write drive) is seen as "VBOX - CD-ROM", hence it is not in the AccurateRip data base. I'm getting the same messages as given above. However, I cannot even get it to work by changing the CD-ROM communication to "Windows Internal" instead of "SCSI Pass-through".

Needless to say, everything was fine when I had a stand-alone Windows system instead of the VirtualBox'ed system under Linux.

Remark: I did also try Exact Audio Copy 1.3, but to no avail either. It didn't get set up for AccurateRip.

Both rippers do run fine without AccurateRip, though. But that's no option for me! Without AccurateRip, dBpoweramp is not even close to its normal self.

Any help out there??? Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: AccurateRip key discs and VirtualBox

This is difficult, as it looks like an issue with the optical drive hardware recognition by AccurateRip in the virtual Windows environment. Unless Spoon has the answer, I'm not sure what else you can try due to Oracle VirtualBox specifying the device as VBOX - CD-ROM, which is non-standard.

It should offer to find the offset, and if you feed enough discs, it should configure.

Re: SOLVED - AccurateRip key discs and VirtualBox

Thank you, Spoon "Da Man". In case your community hasn't presented you with the title of "Honorable Professor" yet, here it is!

Yes, the a.m. configuration of Linux Mint -> Oracle VirtualBox -> Windows 10 64-bit Professional -> dBpoweramp -> CD Ripper works almost perfectly by now. Hoorray!

I guess a few more detailed words would be fine with the dBpa community: In fact, AccurateRip offered to find the CD drive offset, and since it is named "VBOX - CD-ROM" under VirtualBox, it is not known to the AccurateRip database to begin with. Thus, AccurateRip needs to detect the drive offset from scratch, and I fed it a number of key discs to do so. AccurateRip requires three key discs (unique pressings in the database) to be read with identical offset results; in my case, some two dozen discs proved to do the job of finding three. Hint to anybody out there having a similar issue: Go find the very rare CDs in your collection, since they will tend to have been pressed only once. The C2 error pointer detection using the "black triangle marked" CD worked smoothly.

dBpoweramp running "almost perfectly" as stated above means: Sometimes, it won't react to the program's Eject button, and I have to wait a little bit before the drive would react to the physical eject knob. A very minor issue...

Thanks again, Spoon, for your help. Also thanks to you, mville, for giving me your answer and for trusting that Spoon would have an answer.

Great, glad you persevered and got this working.

Good work and excellent advice also for those users with rare/obscure drive configurations.
