How to rip cds with copy protection

    Hi Everybody

I use dBpoweramp CD Ripper to rip cds to Flac files. I keep the Flac files on my NAS (Verbatim Mediashare 1TB), and the music is played on my stereo through Sonos (ZP90 Zone Player).

Things are generally working fine, and I am pleased with dBpoweramp CD Ripper. However, whenever I come across a cd from my music collection, which has a copy portection, I experience problems ripping the cd. For instance, when I recently tried ripping the Ben Harper with The Blind Boys of Alabama "There Will Be a Light" cd using dBpoweramp CD Ripper, the software reported errors on all tracks (all tracks ripped insecurely). This is naturally frustrating, as I honestly don't think it's unfair for me to want to be able to rip all my cds - not just the ones without copy protection. However, unfortunately I haven't figured out how to solve the problem myself, and therefore I am hoping 0that someone at this forum can help me out.

I have noticed that the topic has been discussed at this forum earlier on (some years ago), but even though I have read these old threads, I don't think that I have found a solution to the problem. For instance, holding down the left shift button while inserting the cd doesn't do the trick for me. Anyway, I am just hoping that someone has come up with a great solution to the "copy protection" issue that they would be willing to share with me :smile2:

    Kind regards
    Sybrandt.

As copy protection often have deliberate errors in the data stream, it is normally not possible to get a secure rip.

      Hi Spoon.

Thanks for your answer to my question. I must admit, though, that I was hoping that there would be a solution to my problem. Luckily only a few of my cds are copy protected, but it's still to bad having some cds that I cannot get an accurate rip of. I guess my only option is to buy the copy protected cds again in a download version (MP3)... But it just doesn't feel right having to buy your own cds again - and then even having to settle for a lower quality than I have now! Can anybody suggest some other solutions to the copy protection issue?

      Best regards
      Sybrandt.

Re: How to rip cds with copy protection

I have a few copy protected CDs, real pain in the arse. Why the music industry decides to penalise the people who actually BUY their CDs I will never know. Bunch of dinosaurs...

Anyway - the only way I've been able to get good rips (but not technically secure) is by enabling the 'Defective by Design' ripping method under options. It can't check against accurate rip for obvious reasons, but it's the best chance you have of getting a rip of a copy protected disk (depending on the protection method).

I've had two disks in particular that when ripped with any other ripper would play with a lot of clicks and pops, but when ripped with DBPoweramp and 'Defective by Design' enabled the tracks play back perfectly, so definitely worth a shot if you're still stuck.
