    Scratched Disks and C2 errors

I have a MacPro running bootcamp and Windows 7. I recently purchased dbpoweramp to rip my CD’s to AIFF format.

The Drive is a Pioneer DVR-115D which should have c2 support. However when I go to Detect c2 Support in dbpoweramp and insert a scratched CD it always comes up with C2 is not supported. I was sure this drive has c2 support so I tried the black marker test and c2 was detected.

However, A few days later I found a CD that was in very poor condition with extreme scratching all over the surface. I tried the test again and once again it came back with no C2 support. Other than the black marker test I can't get the dbpoweramp to read c2 on any of the CD’s I’ve tried.

As the C2 doesn't seem to be working correctly or is very poorly implemented on this drive should I turn off C2 errors and use Ultra Secure ripping to achieve the best results?

    Thank you.

Does the disc verify with AccurateRip? if so then c2 was perhaps not needed (if no re-reading).

Hi Spoon, thanks for the reply.

Using the heavily scratched CD with C2 errors on all 10 tracks verify with AccurateRip. Although track 8 Re-Riped 18 frames then verified. Track 9 Re-Riped 3 frames then verified.

With C2 off all 10 tracks verify with AccurateRip. Both tracks 8 & 9 had 2 passes and 5 frames Re-Riped.

Does this help with the recommendation? Let me know if it helps to do any more tests.

It is difficult to say, if you enable the Secure Extraction log: complete (CD Ripper >> Options >> Secure Settings), it lists the frames which c2 highlighted as an error, try ripping track 8 and 9 with that log enabled (also check the option 'Add to Information Log' and make sure it is shown CD Ripper >> Options Drop Menu >> After Ripping 'Display Information Log'

c2 is working as it is dropping frames.

Re: Scratched Disks and C2 errors

Just to be clear - your recommendation is to turn c2 errors on? even thought in my case for some odd reason scratched disks cannot be detected when I press the test button. The c2 errors are working to some degree and therefore its a benefit to have it turned on?

              Many thanks for your help.

I would use c2 unless you have information that its enabling is detrimental to the ripping.
