New External Drive

I have since yesterday a new external drive Plextor PX-830UF (known as PLEXTOR - DVDR PX-830SA in DBP). The 1st one is a PHILIPS - SPD3400CC.
I have some trouble with some cds. I have done a test this morning and the result between the two drives is totally different.

Do not understand this difference for the same cd

And I have controlled the drive read cache and this one propose a cache of 57kb instead of 1024kb
What is the best 57 kb or 1024 kb ?

It means the plextor you have cannot read that disc securely, where-as the other drive can. Changing settings are unlikely not going to help (you can leave the cache at 1024 )

I've tried with others cds and it is the same thing. Where the Philips says all tracks are ripped without any problem the Plextor mention inaccurate tracks with lot of errors.

So, two choices : the Philips is a very bad ripper :smile2: and mention all is ok or the Plextor is a really good cd ripper :D.

Fyg I have bought the Plextor for having a good brand cd ripper because as I have seen here, Plextor could be considered as the top.

So an other question : is it better to have a CD Ripper which could clear the read cache with Fua or not?

I don't think it's better (or worse), but it makes the ripping process quicker.
And it's not only the CD ripper who has to support FUA; also the hardware has to support it.

It is extremely unlikely the Philips drive supports the FUA Cache Invalidate feature, and you may be getting fasle positives on frame matches due to having this set to "Yes".

Thank you for your answers. I have done the test FUA Support with the Philips and DBP mention that this drive support it where the Plextor doesn't.

My problem is I do not understand why a Plextor cannot rip securely a cd where my Philips Drive & the cd drive of my laptop could do it without any problem.

It is uncomprehensible.

And it is not only with one but with several cds.

Not every drive has the same quality of ripping. It is not inconcievable that...that exact plextor model is no good.

Other question regarding the FUA Support is it better to have the case crosschecked or not (for the PHILIPS drive)

Hi all,
I also had a Plextor PX-830UF but eventually sold it because it was inconsistent with the same CD. Someone mentioned that they thought the Plextor PX-830UF was not actually an original Plextor but sourced from another manufacturer.
I would also be interested in a good external ripper since I also use a laptop for ripping.
Any suggestions?

Correct, the "Plextor" PX-830 is not actually made by plextor. In fact, plextor no longer makes any drives.

Thank you Elic for your answer. I've the same problem as Chip, this "Plextor" is really not a good product. So many people here would like to know which external drive could make ripping with good results. Is somebody has an idea?

Just take an empty external case for 5.25" drives and buy the internal cd drive of your choice. It is very easy to put them together and you have a lot of drives to choose from.

Just as an example (as far as I know not available in US):

Take care, you select the right interface. Nowadays a lot of drives are S-ATA and these need an external case with internal S-ATA interface.
