    C2 error pointers asking-the-obvious question

I guess this will sound like a daft question(!), but with this drive:

    Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
    CD Drive: DVDRAM GSA-T20N
    Firmware: WP03
    Serial:
    Maximum Speed: 4234 KB/sec (x24)
    Current Speed: 4234 KB/sec (x24)
    Spin-down After: 2 minutes
    Buffer Size: 2 MB
    Accurate Stream: Yes
    C2 Error Pointers: Yes
    Reads ISRC: Yes
    Reads UPC: Yes

...I presume I should check the "C2 Pointers for Error Detection" box in the Secure Options menu?

I'm a bit unsure as I haven't used the [Detect C2 Support] function, and yet dB knows the drive supports C2. Does it know because of the manufacturer/model number, or something?

One more thing - how do I know if the drive supports C2 well or badly, and so know which Ultra Secure settings to choose (number of passes, maximum re-reads etc).

    Thanks in advance.

Re: C2 error pointers asking-the-obvious question

    Matt:

The drive *reports* that it supports C2 error pointers.

The question is: does the feature actually work? That's what the C2 Error Pointer Test checks.

Some drives report they support it, but they don't. Or they do, but they don't support it *well*.

      Ah, the fog lifts!

OK, I used the [detect] function, and it did detect C2. Now, how do I know whether my drive supports it well or badly? If it's of any relevance at all, judging by the blue progress bar, C2 was detected during the first 25-30% of the disc.

      Thanks again.

Even if your drive supports C2 Error pointers poorly they will still help so I recommend you enable them.

Also, to find out if your drives supports them well it would have to do a certain test that isn't the easiest thing to do.

Ah well, this is the drive I have:

          Drive: HL-DT-ST - DVDRAM GSA-T20N (226 users): 5760 Accurate Submissions 93 InAccurate Submissions 98.4111 % Percentage Accuracy

which is on Spoon's list of "top drives, over 2000 submissions" and it looks a decent percentage, so I'll assume it's reasonably good...!

Thats good so you should enable C2 error pointers.
