    New Plextor 230A issue

I got my new plextor drive today and hooked it up. I opened the CD Ripper and chose that drive from the dropdown menu. Now the response time to do anything in the program is very delayed. I checked the task manager (XP pro) and found nothing unusual. I then switched back to the other CD drive and it freed up the program. No other programs are bogging down. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? The CD in the Plextor 230A plays fine using variouse players but it seems the program is having some sort of issue with it.

    1. How is it hooked up? IDE/SATA/Firewire/USB/etc?
    2. What is the Communication line set to near the bottom of the Options screen?

If I set it to: windows internal >> it frees up the program but I cant use advanced functions like c2.

          Should I do this?

          Start --> run --> regedit
          Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Illustrate\dBpoweramp
Change "CDRipper_Com" to "2", that is the setting for Internal.

          OR THIS?
...also how to do a full reset of dBpoweramp? (if dBpoweramp crashes for some reason) Where does dBpoweramp save its files / settings? It is installed to c:\Program Files\Illustrate\dBpoweramp or c:\Program Files (x86)\Illustrate\dBpoweramp The 64 bit version of dBpoweramp is installed to: c:\Program Files\dBpoweramp It

I just paid way too much money for this drive and am now completely frustrated. Should I send it back? Do you guys think the problem is with the drive or software/settings?

The registry key is just a manual way to get the CD Ripper to Windows Internal.

The drive is not the problem, perhaps how it is connected to the system, or your chipset drivers.

I believe I used the latest chipset drivers but I don't think I am running the latest Bios. Board = GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H

Do you think that could be the problem? I will check the drivers anyway.

I don't think it is the way I have it connected because I only have one IDE on the board and the 230A is the only devise connected to it (master). Do you think I should try cable select? The only other CD drive is SATA.

Nothing has worked. I flashed the Bios to the latest version and installed the latest drivers. I then tried setting the 230A to slave and still no luck. Any more ideas? Should I call Gigabyte support?

Can you try connecting it via an external USB (or Firewire) to IDE bridge?

I dont know how I could do that without additional hardware. I will throw this drive in another machine tomorrow and see if the issue persists. I have a nagging feeling that it has something to do with the JMicron 368 chip on my board. This board is fairly new and it seems like they threw an IDE on it just to say it has one.

Update: I put the drive in another machine and it seems to work fine. I think this drive or dbpoweramp has an issue with the nvidia 9400 chipset which includes the JMicron 368 on my board. I tried to install the driver directly from the JMicron website but those drivers don't install for embedded chips (ones that come bundled on the board) so I installed the latest bundle (from nvidia website) for my chipset and still had no luck. I am officially bummed. Do you guys think a IDE to SATA addapter might work? That way I could connect it to one of the SATA ports on my board.

It's possible. If you look around you can often get one off ebay for $5 shipped.

Of course, if your problem is elsewhere (filter drivers, etc.) then it won't really help.

I think the JMicron chip is only for the IDE. Maybe I'll get lucky.
