My rips are slow in burst mode

    Hi all

I usually rip in burst mode, only switching to secure if I get an inaccurate result.

However my writer is very flaky when it comes to spinning up into fast speeds.

Most of the time, it can be over 70% of the way through a disc before it speeds up. Sometimes it never bothers at all.

My writer is a Samsung SH-S183L. I've tried updating it to the latest SB03 firmware, but it made no difference to the results I get.

My typical secure mode and badly performing burst mode is 6x to 15x across a disc.

When burst mode is working, I get between 22x (on the odd times it spins up early) and 40x.

    Any ideas?

The Samsung drives make their own decisions as to speed based on disc conditions. I've seem similar behavior with the follow up drives (SH-S20x and SH-S22x series). I suspect that the quality of the read surface as well as the disc balance are both considered by the drive before shifting gears into high-speed.

I don't have an 18x series to compare against, so I don't know if the slow/fast ratio you are seeing is normal or not for that drive model. For the 20x and 22x it's certainly < 25% of discs at the slower speeds.

PS - secure mode already encompasses your strategy - it too first performs a burst rip and if the result is inaccurate, then it performs additional rip passes and frame rerips. simplify your life and stick with 100% secure mode.

Re: My rips are slow in burst mode

Thanks for the quick reply. I am sure however the problems I'm having appear to be related to dBpoweramp.

For my sins, I installed a copy of Ripstation Micro. This rips to FLAC in burst mode and my drive spins up to max speed immediately - absolutely no hesitation.

By the way, you mention secure mode is the way to go. I agree that's the workflow I would prefer to use, but in secure mode my drive never spins up to full speed. :/

What are your settings on the Options configuration screen and the Secure configuration screen?

Hmm. I wonder if RSMicro is using C2 and if the drive behavior differers if that is enabled. Can you try an experiment: set C2 to disabled and set the read cache to 0?

If no change, then the drive might be expecting a different way of speed setting than dbpoweramp uses. IIRC, there are three interrelated/codependent methods of doing so: Set CD Speed, Set Streaming and (partially) Set Read Ahead.

              Hi Brendan

Thanks for the suggestions. No joy I'm afraid.

Do you think there might be a reg hack or similar to correct the speed setting for this drive type? I guess only spoon could answer.

Right, I should have known it wouldn't work, since it was slow in burst mode anyway. I'm at a loss at this point.

One other thing (that seems odd to me):

If I rip a disc that I know will not be in the AR database (e.g. because it's a cd copy I copied to a blank disc a few years ago), it will rip as secure after a single pass.

This leads me to believe that dbp is somehow bypassing burst mode altogether. Not sure if this has any bearing on my current issues?

If the drive speed is set to maximum we leave it as that, we do not try to set the drive speed. Selecting one of the higher speeds might help.

Also click options and the drive advanced options (where it lists the current speed the drive is on), try before and after ripping.

Still no success. dBpoweramp is doing something to throttle the speed of this drive.

I've now managed to get secure mode to spin up occasionally, but it's still random as when it will do so.

Ripstation Micro always spins up to max speed, but I'd much rather use dba (after all, I paid for it! )
