Restarting Asset UPnP - how long should it take?

    Hi all

I have a problem using my Naim NDX streamer with Asset UPnp, it was working all ok a few weeks back but now the Naim app only recognises a few albums out of many

I have spoken to Naim and after various ideas am still without full access to all my albums stored on my WD hard drive.

It has been suggested to re boot the Asset software but upon clicking "Restart Asset UPnP" on the bottom left of the Asset front page it seems to just hang, am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks for any advice

You say music is on your WD hard drive …. what is your Asset UPnP installed on.
Also what is the Naim app on?

Can you browse the music folders on the iMac? try copying the a few tracks to the mac Documents folder to see if they can be read.

            Hi Happy,
I don't know if this is resolved yet, however I have a few suggestions that you may want to look at if you haven't already.

Your original question asks how long it should take Asset Server to restart. Certainly for me, it shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes. However I run Asset on a NAS so I don't know if that time would differ when running off a stand alone computer.

Is this iMAC dedicated to just music streaming? or is it used for many different things (like a regular home computer might be?). When it comes to running any media server, it is best practice to have it running constantly with a few other processes/programs running as possible. If you only have 1 computer, most people choose to created a virtual machine (VM) in order to run their server.

How are your devices (Naim and iMAC) connected? If not connected via ETHERNET, there can be significant performance issues. If there's no possible way to use Ethernet (hopefully there is though), check the WiFi strength. If you have any "signal boosters". disconnect and unplug them for testing purposes. These boosters can give "false positives". By that, I mean a device can connect to one and it shows "100% strength", but the signal before it gets to that extender or booster is quite low, so it is of no benefit and making you think you have a strong connection when actually you don't.

With the WD drive, is it an "HDD" meaning a "spinning platter" standard type, or and "SSD"? If it is an "HDD" check the speed in the drive specs. Regular storage, a speed of 5400rpm is acceptable however for Audio or quick access/high data transfer (which media streaming is) you should ideally have a drive at 7200rpm or an SSD drive.

With regards to the WD drive connection a further few things to check are : the speed of the USB port. A minimum should be USB 3.0, but ensure the port on the iMAC, the connection cable and the drive meet these specs too. If one of the components is lower than USB 3.0, then that lower transfer rate is the fastest it will be.

Are you running any other USB devices on the iMAC? Another issue can be "bus power" so if you are running any other USB devices, including USB hub/s, disconnect these and see if the problem resolves.

Finally, is the WD drive connected constantly? Hopefully it is, but if it isn't check that the drive NAME and/or letter is staying the same and that you are using the same USB port each time.
Asset will "index" the drive name, port and letter. If that changes, it will struggle to find your WD drive and files, so you will need to clear and re-index your library every time before you settle down to some music appreciation time. If you have a large library like me, it could take a good few hours to re-scan........each time.

Hopefully some of these will help you resolve your issues
