Alphabetic.
[...] for artist there is an option which excludes a contributing artist from the main artist tree.
From my testing, it appears that, at least WRT multiple values in the ARTIST tag, Asset has a hierarchical approach.
The first ARTIST tag in the file is deemed the Main artist. Any subsequent ARTIST tags are deemed Contributing artist(s). There doesn't appear to be any way to designate one or more ARTIST tags as Main artist; only the first one is deemed as such. As the documentation explains (not very clearly), by default, Contributing artists are not shown in the ARTIST/ALBUM navtree; they can only be found through Advanced Search, and that one shows only tracks, not albums. To show Contributing artists in the ARTIST/ALBUM navtree, one has to turn on the Contributing Artists with Main Artists option, and re-build the database.
And here's how this doesn't work very well in practice.
Let's assume your collection includes two albums, Jim Hall & Pat Metheny's "Jim Hall & Pat Metheny" (1999) and Charlie Haden's "Nocturne" (2001). Pat Metheny co-stars on the first, and appears on only 1 track on the latter. Asset's default setting works fine for "Nocturne" (it seems to have been designed for this kind of album), but not at all for "Jim Hall & Pat Metheny", where Metheny is as much a "main artist" as Jim Hall. The Contributing Artists... option works fine for "Jim Hall & Pat Metheny", but not for "Nocturne". The ARTIST tag on "Jim Hall & Pat Metheny" could be set to, say, "Jim Hall/Pat Metheny", but this isn't a good solution either.Comment
