    Switch off "Library Scanning"

    Hello,

I'm running UPnP 4 on a dedicated music server with WHS and power pack 3.
When listening to music on my Linn Akurate DS I get dropouts on a regular basis and I found out that this happens only when UPnP is scanning the library/counting audio tracks (which IMHO happens too often even if no new tracks were added).

    So my question:
Is it possible to disable the scanning/counting function for a certain time (especially when trying to enjoy gapless music )
I tried to turn off UPnP but of course this didn't help at all; the next thing was to disable "Detect & catalog new tracks" but that didn't prevent UPnP from scanning.

It would be great to have a function like anti-virus programs offer where you can determine the time when scanning shall take place e.g. during the night time. Maybe UPnP already has such a feature and I just wasn't able to find it?

    Any help appreciated

    Re: Switch off "Library Scanning"

just to add some more information:

I was checking the UPnP behavior for the last few hours now and there were only a few minutes between any scanning/counting activities.
I thought (hoped) when the scanning was finished and you get the result xxxx albums yyy tracks it would last for a little while (as no new tracks were added in the meantime!) but then it starts all over again and again and..............

I'm not sure if this was the same with release 3 but my feeling is that there were not as many dropouts while listening hence less scanning?

Enable the debug mode in Asset, in the General Settings. Restart Asset and leave it for 2 hours. Then post the contents of the log please.

        Hi Spoon,

thank you very much for your fast reply.
I did as you told me and this is result after about 2 1/2 hours. I did not add a new album or any tracks in the meantime, just listening to the music.
Anyway here is the log you asked for:

I've just seen that there's another log asset-debug-asset.txt but "The text that you have entered is too long (521768 characters). Please shorten it to 90000 characters long."

If you need this too please tell me how I can send this to you.

        Thanks for your help!

You posted the correct log file.

'MediaFoldersWatch.txt' Changed, any ideas what is modifying that file? (it is in the same folder as your log files), have a look at the last modified date. Normally this only changes if a new folder is added to Asset from the configuration page, if you keep the configuration page closed it should not change (right click on the file >> Properties) have a look at the last modified date, say once an hour, is it changing?

            Hi Spoon,

thanks for your reply; no I have absolutely no idea what is/was modifying the file as no files were added or deleted, the server was only on for providing the files to my Linn.

I was looking at the MediaFoldersWatch properties for approx. 5 hours now and while there were a lot of changes in the first 1 1/2 hours (nearly every 20 minutes) there were no changes since the last 3 1/2 hours?
While listening to music from the server in the meantime there were no dropouts in the beginning but during the last 45 minutes there were dropouts here and there again.

Shall I run the debug mode again?

Mediafolderswatch would not indicate a change if you add new files to your library, if is if a new location is added to be watched, I do not think anything is being added to that file, rather something is opening it with write acces and changing the modified time, asset would then think a rescan is needed.

                You have security software?

I have Norton Internet Security 2012 on the main PC but no special security software on the server.

P.S. Yesterday evening I was running the debug mode again for ca. 3 hours and this time the log file was empty, but rescanning did happen.

There are 2 log files, one for the Asset and one for the scanner, you were looking at the correct one?

both asset-debug-asset.txt and asset-debug-lib.txt were completely empty; I've just started the debug mode a third time and will (like during the last scan) not use UPnP in the meantime (no music, no adding or changing of music files etc.).

The first time I used debug mode I got two results; the one posted above and a second (pretty extensive) one that showed all my activities in selecting various music files I listened to during the scanning took place.

you probabbly have to reenable the debug mode and restart the computer.

                            Re: how do you do

                            It's me again.

Tried several things without any success.
I installed R4.1 and no change (o.k. was wishful thinking).

I restarted UPnP and the server several times (it's only running for a few hours a day, just for listening purposes).
I disabled the "Detect & Catalog New Tracks" and what do I see right at the moment; "Scanning Library" even with disabled detecting function? (I did not start a manual "Detecting Changes" or "Refresh All")......

It's a bit annoying at the moment as it is not possible to listen to say an album without several interruptions/dropouts.
Either the WHS is working (don't know the correct English expression, must be something like storage adjustment, in German it's called Speicher Ausgleich) every ca. 1 1/2 hours and in-between, before or after the scanning of the library by UPnP (even with disabled auto detect function and no new files added).

I'm wondering as when I bought the server dropouts were very very rare; o.k. since then two 2TB HDDs and a lot of files were added.
My dream would be to stop the WHS adjustment activities and the UPnP scanning at least for 4-5 hours a day; I don't care if those activities would be running during the night time or early in the morning when I don't listen to the music.
