    obtaining CD quality audio

I have been trying without success to serve CD quality music from my computer to my receiver.

My music is stored in an Apple Lossless format. I would be willing to change to a format like FLAC if needed.

I used to use the Apple Airport Express with an optical cable and a media extender from SageTV to transfer music to my receiver. I recently upgraded to higher end speakers and the sound degradation of these two methods became apparent. I always assumed that transfering music from my computer in a digital format would not result in not audio quality loss, but I was wrong. There are so many things going on, such as codecs and the use of AC3filter, that I am not sure where the problem is. I hate the idea of going back to playing CDs directly.

Asset was extremely easy to install and was instantly recognized by my Sony TV. The sound quality is the best that I have found so far. It is nearly CD quality, but it is not quite there. For comparison, I am burning CDs from Apple Lossless files and comparing the sound to the Apple lossless files streamed from my computer. I have an optical cable between my TV and the receiver. The TV reads the file format as LPCM, so I am assuming that it is being transcoded to some extent.

My current guess is that the audio quality is being negatively affected, because my Sony TV is unable to decode Apple Lossless files directly. Another guess is that the encoders that I am using change the sound slightly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve sound quality to CD quality? If I need a media player that natively supports a lossless format, does anyone have any suggestions? I know that there are standalone products from Olive, but I have a hard time believing that it can't be done with music stored on a computer.

    Re: obtaining CD quality audio

I (and many other serious music fans that want CD quality (or better)) believe we can obtain this with Squeezebox products. I've been a happy user of SB products for several years. I use FLAC, but they can deal with Apple Lossless as well. I suspect your issue is in either the player (sony tv) or the sound card of the computer, which can do bad things. The SB players are not affected (don't use) your computer's sound card. This said, with the right player hardware that can deal with the digital music, you should be able to achieve this with ASSET as well.

For example, this is my setup (two different locations)

System 1: Vortexbox Appliance (1.5) > SbS 7.5.4 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio)
System 2: Win7(64) laptop > SbS 7.6.1 > Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio and laptop)
    Retired: SB3, Duet Receiver
Controlled at both locations with: iPhone (iPeng), iPad (iPengHD & SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.6 on Win7(64) laptop
Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Additional Tagging - mp3tag

Thanks for the response. It looks like the Squeezebox Touch may be what I am looking for. I like the app that is available for iPhones. I have a iPod Touch and the app is one of the reasons that I like the Airport Express. The support for gapless playback is something that my SageTV extender did not support. I am downloading the Squeezebox server and will have to check things out.

Asset is still a nice program that I discovered accidentally while looking for dbPoweramp update while attempting to convert music for another solution that I was testing.

Good community of support over here. And check out the ipeng app for iPhone control. Much better than the free one.

I just placed an order for a Squeezebox Touch. I could not find substantial negative comments. Thanks again.

I took a chance with posting on slickdeals.com and purchased a coupon code for $1 that gave me 50% off the suggested price - good until 9/14.
