I have been trying without success to serve CD quality music from my computer to my receiver.
My music is stored in an Apple Lossless format. I would be willing to change to a format like FLAC if needed.
I used to use the Apple Airport Express with an optical cable and a media extender from SageTV to transfer music to my receiver. I recently upgraded to higher end speakers and the sound degradation of these two methods became apparent. I always assumed that transfering music from my computer in a digital format would not result in not audio quality loss, but I was wrong. There are so many things going on, such as codecs and the use of AC3filter, that I am not sure where the problem is. I hate the idea of going back to playing CDs directly.
Asset was extremely easy to install and was instantly recognized by my Sony TV. The sound quality is the best that I have found so far. It is nearly CD quality, but it is not quite there. For comparison, I am burning CDs from Apple Lossless files and comparing the sound to the Apple lossless files streamed from my computer. I have an optical cable between my TV and the receiver. The TV reads the file format as LPCM, so I am assuming that it is being transcoded to some extent.
My current guess is that the audio quality is being negatively affected, because my Sony TV is unable to decode Apple Lossless files directly. Another guess is that the encoders that I am using change the sound slightly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve sound quality to CD quality? If I need a media player that natively supports a lossless format, does anyone have any suggestions? I know that there are standalone products from Olive, but I have a hard time believing that it can't be done with music stored on a computer.
