After paying up good money to register this thing I've now bieng infected with 'Kelvir-W' virus which was got from the file i was given from the email link.
My antivirus program also found the same virus in the MP4 file on the main site.
WTF? Is this for real?
The antivirus program is Avast and is totally up to date, have been using it for 2 years and has never let me down yet.

Noticed the same thing on the m4a plugin, which I could *really* use right now. Also using Avast. Avast has popped up some false positives in the past, but I don't want to take a chance with this one. Anyone have any further info on this?
This is in reference to the first plugin on http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-mp4.htm. All the others are fine, but the first one on the page is required to preserve tags, apparently.

I just did a virus scan with trend micro's online scanner and it said the file was fine. As far as the other online scanners go, I can't run them because Avast is telling me they're all virii. Heh. Starting to doubt this file has a virus - but still not taking a chance until this is cleared up by someone.
edit: both avg free edition and panda online scanners say the file is ok. there's also a post in the avast forums about various dbpoweramp files giving false positives.

ah! I thought it might be just me! I was a little p**sed off. I did have a quick look round the forum in the most likely spots but didn't find anything.
There isn't an email address for support which, in the case of a possible virus in the code is a lot rubbish.

This is the first time I have heard of any virus infecting the software on this site. Maybe Avast is giving you false positives - I use AVG myself.
For email contact try this link http://www.dbpoweramp.com/email.htm

It's not the first time I have heard of Avast giving false positives - it's well known for doing so. The same has happened on the Audiograbber forums recently.
I too use AVG.

That AVAST program is proving to be a big PITA in so many respects.
Just as some firewalls are, like Outpost or Norton Security Suite which cause no end of problems.
There is no virus in any dBpowerAMP products downloaded from here. Period.

"There is no virus in andy dBpowerAMP products downloaded from here. Period."
Thats good to hear. I didn't think you'd be selling infected products on purpose, there are always ways to get into 'secure' systems though. I wanted to be sure.
Since I don't spend that much time infront of a screen I wasn't aware of the ins and outs of antivirus programs. I just use them.
I'll go back to using andy's poweramp.

Unless it shows an exact virus these virus checkers give a warning of a possible virus (the dbpoweramp installs put information after the .exe, various virus pick this up wrongly).
To recap - there is no virus in any current dbpoweramp codec, or install - they are all checked against 3 virus checkers (that do not suck ;) ).

What virus scanners do people recommend? I thought avast was real good and have been using it for a long time, but after several false positives yesterday, I'm rethinking my choice of scanners. I won't use McAfee or Norton (they're too intrusive), but what are other good ones?

It's been mentioned already, but AVG.

Try it, it's free and reliable. I use it all the time.
Speaking of protection (tell me if I'm going too off topic)

Personally, I use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition that I received via my college. I say its like Norton without the bloat. :)
Other than that, I'd go with AVG.

I use free AVG plus free Sygate Personal Firewall.
Also free Ad-Aware to get rid of obvious spyware.
I have used SpyBot before, though I didn't reinstall it after a system rebuild. I found it had some hidden agenda that clashed with my own ;)
Once in a while I run Panda software just to asssure myself that all's OK.
I've not had reason to complain of anything. Perhaps AVG takes a bit too long to perform the full daily scan I insist on (on my pc, with 2 large HD's that are pretty full, it takes nearly 2 hours, and my pc's not too slow, plus I have 1GB ram as well). When it scans everything else is slowed down considerably. I let it run in the early morning hours (5am) when I'm not likely to be online.

F-Secure
NOD
to name two not mentioned (I prefer f-secure fprot as it has low system usage requirements).

NOD or AntiVir.
NOD actually detects trojans just by loading certain webpages.

I did a test on diff. suites.. Panda-norton-mcafee
Panda-slow start-up and shut sown.. Scans both times.. Fast internet..
Norton- Fast start-up and slow-down, lags your bandwidth.. Slow internet..
Mcafee- fast start-up and shut-down..also doesnt lag your internet.. :) :)
Mcafee i think is best out of the 3..

If you talking about "Norton Internet Security" I avoid this like the plague. The firewall is overzealous and frankly a PITA to deal with. You cannot shut it off, just "disable" it until either a timer runs out or until you reboot the computer. There is no way to totally exit it.
I haven't dealt with Panda ever and haven't dealt with McAfee in about 4 years.

Last time I dealt with McAffe it had spent 2 months deleting without a trace every single email that was getting into my OE inbox faster than I could see it coming in. After I accused Microsoft's Oultook Express of messing up my email, I found out it was actually McAffe that was incompatible with that latest release of OE. Instead of McAffe saying oops, sorry, here's a fixed version of McAffe, they said yeah, it's incompatible and you need to upgrade McAffe but you have to pay for it. It was good-bye McAffe immediately I asure you.
Panda's good to find the odd trojan or virus that may escape other resident programs.

I'd stick with AVG and SpywareBlaster (SpywareBlaster SILENTLY blocks all those bad pages that you'd not want). They both consume little CPU and keep your computer alive and healthy without bugging you with "VIRUS DETECTED" popping up every 5 seconds.

Gonna give a bunch of these a spin. I used to use AVG Free, but quite often it wouldn't detect virii. It was years ago, so perhaps it has improved.
Also, little addition on the spyware front: ewido. It catches spyware/tracking cookies that *nothing* else does. I run adaware, spybot as well, but ewido is the one that always catches the real nasty stuff that the others miss.

Tracking cookies are not spyware, nor are they nasty - they are just bits of text with no powers of their own :p
I'd be careful with using anyhting too aggressive, as you'd find you're blocked out of many sites for no apparent good reason but an overactive firewall or anti-spyware program that can't tell good from bad.

well i used to use avg and sygate peronal firewall. but sygate was aquired by norton. so i upgraded to "Norton Internet Security" and dropped avg.
this is the 2006 version. you can easily disable both virus and firewall. so not sure why some people can't?
but like anything new when you try it there is a learning curve. a friend of mine just uses fprot and swears by it.

>sygate peronal firewall
I had sygate on a laptop and if you watch the hard disk they are reading the same files over and over every 5-10 seconds (not even using Windows cache), this I disliked alot (there are tools on sysinternals that can tell what files a program is looking at).

It seems to behave for me on my computers. Sometimes it does max the CPU when I'm transferring something via the Internet and is annoying, but is the best firewall I've managed to find that isn't annoying in various ways.
I have noticed that it looks like the 2006 version of the Norton Firewall is an improvement over previous versions, but I have still seen too many problems it causes to use it personally.
Also, having to basically rebuy the firewall every year isn't really the best way to get on my good side. :) Do they even sell the firewall separately or only in "Norton Internet Security"?
Wayne

Both Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus can be bought separately.
I'm currently using AVG and Kerio Personal Firewall.
