    Bug converting wav>m4a, flac>m4a, and shn>m4a

i get mixed results when using the FAAC m4a codec. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't when converting from the same originals that i've converted to mp3 without trouble. particular batches of flacs and shns are particularly troublesome. sometimes if i try over and over again i can get it to work. no errors are ever reported, the converter simply goes through the motions as if it is working, but no new files are created and the sources are not deleted even though i've checked that box. WHat the heck is going on??? please help. :thumbdown

Please don't use the option to delete sources - it's too destructive. You'd be very sorry if that happens and your converted files are no good. Delete them manually later, once you've dtermined conversions are fine.

Did you install all programs (converter and codes) to the same folder and as an administartor? Are you running the program as administartor or power user at least?

If you pick one of the files that didn't get converted, can you convert it separately? Can you test convert it? Are you fully aware of where the output is suposed to go? Are you looking in the right folder for that?

when i do not select to delete sources, and instead direct it to output the sources to a different folder, it creates the new folder but does not create the m4a files in the new folder. often, when working with flacs or shns, it does work when i convert files one-at-a-time, but converts only a few of the files when i try and convert a whole directory. however, the wav files i have do not convert under any circumstances. how can i check to see that i have sufficient priviliges? i am running winXPpro and am the only user. everything is installed in the default directories. i can convert to mp3 without trouble, it is when i try to convert to m4a that the software doesn't work properly.

What settings are you using for your m4a encoding (bits, frequency, quality/bitrate setting, channels)? What characteristics do your source files have in terms of bits, frequency, channels, bitrates?

the wavs that wont convert at all are 16-bit, 2-channel, 44khz PCM, 1411kbps. the settings i am trying to use are 250VBR with the FAAC codec (other settings are default). i tried the nero mp4 codec just now on some shns and flacs that didnt work with FAAC codec and it seems to be doing a better job, but is very slow. i will try the wavs with the nero codec.

What is the typical track length on your wave files?
Did you rip them with dBpowerAMP Music Converter?
If not, what program did you use?
Can you post your dMC Configuration settings so we can confirm what you have installed?

            Best wishes,
            Bill

You might want to try installing the iTunes m4a codec. This, like the Nero codec, only addresses encoding, not decoding. Just on the off-chance it might make a difference, I would add the AAC codec to see if that might help, especially with reading your m4a files.

File tags can sometimes throw conversions off. Do any of the files you are trying to convert have album art, unicode characters, or long comment fields in their tags?

Otherwise your installation looks ok and your files appear to be suitably manageable. Perhaps another user has some suggestions.

                  Best wishes,
                  Bill

well the nero codec handled the wav>m4a conversion fine so i suppose i will stick with it. i will try the itunes codec if the nero one gives me issues on other files.
