    Can't Convert .cda's anymore

I've registered and used dbpowerAMP Music Converter for a long time with great results. Now, all of the sudden, I can't convert any .cda files to mp3. I have version 11, windows XP pro (SP2). I get "The CODEC required to decompress 'D:\Track01.cda' could not be opened.
Unable to access CD Drive 'D:\Track01.cda' This is a song bought on itunes and burned onto CD. I also can no longer rip any of my own CD's to mp3. Please help. Chuck

    Re: Can't Convert .cda's anymore

When you say you can no longer rip any of your own CDs to mp3, I take it this applies to store-bought CDs as well as home-made CDs. With your other CDs, do they give the same error message?

Are you attempting to access this CD through dMC Audio CD input?
Do the tracks show up in the Audio CD input window?
As a diagnostic tool, if you open up a CD in Audio CD Input, select one or more tracks and do a test conversion (same as a regular rip except that where you specify mp3 as your output format, select "Test Conversion (No Write)". Is the test conversion successful? If the test conversion is successful, you may want to look at your mp3 settings. What bit setting, bitrate, frequency and number of channels are you specifying? Can you rip to standard .wav (PCM, 16 bit, 44.1 kHz, 2 channel)? And then can you rip from .wav to mp3?

The other possibility is that your test conversion is unsuccessful. In that case, try opening up a cd in dMC Audio CD input. Click on the arrow by the Option button and select Standard CD Emulation. Look at the entry on Table of Contents Detection. Note whether it has a check by it or not. Now click on that entry to either place a check there (if it was unchecked) or it will remove a check mark (if it was originally checked). Now try another test conversion or rip to see if that makes a difference.

If it does not, click on the Options button on the dMC Audio CD Input select the line CD Drive and click on Advanced. In the window that opens up (dMC Advanced Ripping Configuration in dMC 1.5, in release 11 it may be dMC Audio CD Configuration) look at the setting for CD Communication. Set this to Windows Internal (Limited) (this is the option in release 11.5, in earlier releases it was something like Windows NT/2000 (Limited)). Now try ripping (or test converting) again.

If these two steps do not work, I would probably recommend a complete uninstall/reinstall of dMC (and upgrade to release 11.5 while you are at it).

    Best wishes,
    Bill

Use the program 'Audio CD Input' to rip the cd.

        Re: Can't Convert .cda's anymore

        Ok,
Lastest troubles. I am trying to rip from the "convert to" button. Same error as before."The CODEC required to decompress 'D:\Track01.cda' could not be opened.
Changed the DMC Config from "aspi" to "windows internal". That worked but ripped to ram first, which is slower. Then I lost the "convert to" button. Tried to get that back by resetting the config. No luck. I am also having problems ripping from itunes which I though was related to ASPI. Since I had to change the DMC Config from "ASPI", I thought I had a common thread. Ended up uninstalling powerAMP (ver 11) and reinstalling (ver 11.5) which now, or course, does not recognize my registration. The "convert to" button is back but cannot convert anything to MP3....powerAMP says my trial period expired, 5 minutes after download? (I thought I had 30 days)

Question: How can I get my old registration to apply to this version of powerAMP.
Question: Could ASPI be messing up things, in powerAMP and itunes? I disabled aspi with no effect. My understanding is that Win XP does not need aspi. Thanks.

To get your registered status back and if you have your order number, follow the instructions here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/registration/

The ASPI setting in dMC won't affect iTunes. Correct, WinXP doesn't even come with ASPI.

Re-issue registered version of dBpowerAMP can be downloaded from this page:

You are best not using right click >> Convert To for cd files, use the program 'audio cd input' and it will connect to freedb to get track names.
