Converting from RM to WAV

Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Receiving this message while trying to convert from RM to WAV:

The CODEC required to decompress 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\AveMaria2.rm' could not be opened.
DirectShow filter for '.rm' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt.


In DMC configuration window it shows the DirectShow Decoder ".rm" as installed.

I read everything I could find in this forum on the subject and consequently uninstalled the codec. I then downloaded it again and reinstalled it. There was some mention of removing it from the registry but I didn't know which keys so didn't.

I also downloaded my RM song again.

If anyone wants to go to the trouble, you might try it on your computer so I will know if it is the song or something I'm doing.

Did you also install Real Alternative?

After editing the filter file, did you run dMC Configuration?

The conversion works fine for me.

What is real alternative and where do you get it?

Yes I ran the configuration again.... I think. I opened it and it shows my codec as installed. Is there more involved than opening it again?

So you skipped some steps in installing the codec

The filters can only work if you have a component that comes with Real Alternative installed.

you can use the junky realtime conversion old real audio decoder if you cant get it to work with the directshow plugin

Thanks for the responses.

I uninstalled Real Player and installed Real Alternative and verified that it is working.

Rebooted my PC and tried to convert my rm file again. This is the error that I received:

The CODEC required to decompress 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\AveMaria2.rm' could not be opened.
DirectShow filter for '.rm' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt.

Here is my configuration (which shows that I have the rm decoder installed - is that the same as a filter?):

I added the .rm line to my DirectShow text file as directed.

Maybe I've left something else out. I am a brand new user of this program and not particularly knowledgeable about music file conversions so maybe I'm just not understanding the directions.

Any more suggestions?

Uninstall the RealAudio encoder program, you cannot use it without RealPlayer.

Also, did you check the box for the "RealMedia DirectShow Splitter" when you installed RealAlternative? I'm not sure if it is a default option, reinstall the program to be sure. Also, will Media Player Classic play this file?

Well, is there a possibility that your copy of that real media file is corrupted or incomplete? I had no problem converting it.

Run the test conversion. Just select Test Conversion (no write) instead of wave for an output codec in dMC.

Are you signed in as administrator?

I've done two things.

First I downloaded the file again just in case it was corrupt.

Then I tried to convert using the test conversion. I still got this error

So, I am going to uninstall everything and start over.

I will install "real alternative"
and then go to "view/options/filters/overides/real media splitter ??? is this correct?

Next I will install DB PowerAmp converter.

I will install the Decoder for RM to WAV
I will alter the Direct Show Text file to show the .rm decoder

I did a lot of other things on that first installation but need to keep it simple to do this one task then I will branch out.

Am I leaving out anything?

Are there registry entries that I should remove after uninstalling everything?

It was suggested that I "Uninstall the RealAudio encoder program", but I'm not sure what that program is and how to go about uninstalling it since I can't find it in my program files or in the list of add/remove programs in control panel.

Thanks for all the help on this. Music stuff seems to be much more complicated than you anticipate before you get into it

Make sure when you install Real Alternative the option to install the Real Media Splitter is selected to be install.

The Real Media Encoder is a program you'd have had to install by itself, downloaded from real Networks, and it permists encoding audio and/or video to the Real Media format.. But it doesn't affect anything, I have always had it msyelf.

What does not work properly together is Real Player and Real Alternative. They are almost mutually exclusive it seems. Well, actually it seems that keeping both decoding codecs (disrctshow & real media filetr vs real media decoding codec) may cause errors in getpopupinfo. Not sure what it is, but I used to have this problem and the solution was to decide for one or the other but not both, which implicitly meant having to choose between using Real Player and Real Alternative with real media filters.

after installing real alternative... open an rm file in mplayer2 (wmp 6.4) or some other directshow player to verify that it is working.

We are not talking about the encoder here, but rather the decoders for real media. The choice is between directshow with real media filters (enabled through the installation of Real Alternative and the splitter) and the real media decoder from Real Networks. One or the other options wants exclusivity.

Well I'm still not having any luck here.

I uninstalled real alternative, dmc (and decoders that I added). Then I ran Norton Win Doctor (2003) and let it clean up the junk (which was mainly from uninstall of RealOne Player).

Then I reinstalled real alternative with the splitter option, and verified that it works.

It was suggested that I try to play the song in Windows Media Player 2 or WinAmp 6.4, however I don't have those versions. I have WMP 10 and winamp 5.11, and neither of those would play the .rm song that I want to convert. The WMP error was

C00D11CD: Unknown error
Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to Windows Media Player.

Error ID = 0xC00D11CD, Condition ID = 0x00000000

The Winamp error flashes just for a second but it says:

MCI Error: Incompatible Media

I also installed DbPower Amp Music Converter and the Direct Show Decoder.

I added .rm to the Direct Show Decoder text file and opened the DMC configuration window. I vereified that the .rm decoder is showing up.

I then tried converting my song - test conversion only with no write and received this message:

DirectShow filter for '.rm' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt.

Trying to convert rm to wav produces the exact same error as does attempted conversion to MP3. This leads me to the conclusion that the problem is with the direct show. I was able to use DMC to convert from MP3 and also from WAV so it is just the RM that's not working at this point.

I must be leaving out a small but critical step at some point but this is driving me crazy!!!
