    Convert m4p to mp3?

I just downloaded dBpowerAMP Music Converter and then purchased the PowerPack for $14, because I wanted to convert an m4p file (purchased from iTunes) to an mp3 format.

I have a Creative MP3 player, so the iTunes m4p format is no good for me.

Did I make a mistake? Does dBpowerAMP Music Converter not offer a way to convert from m4p to mp3?

    Re: Convert m4p to mp3?

If your file is a genuine m4p file purchased from the iTunes music store there currently are no means of converting it to any other format in a regular way because the file has DRM (Digital Rights Management) measures applied to it to hinder copying and conversion of the file. We have a standing FAQ (as a sticky post) on this issue in the DRM and CD Copy Protection of the forum here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=7423

Now, as for your issue, I suppose you have checked to see if iTunes would let you convert this file to mp3?

Assuming it cannot, or that even if it does it may not allow you to transfer the mp3 to your Creative player, you have two options:
    1. You can record the file to mp3 (or to wave which you can then convert to mp3) using dMC Auxilary Input. You will find information on using Auxilary Input in your Help file (Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Help>Auxilary Input Help) and also in the FAQ for dBpowerAMP Music Converter here:
dMC Auxiliary Input is used to record audio to your hard drive from what is being played through your soundcard. Applications include transferring cassettes or vinyl to your pc for further processing and perhaps for burning to audio cd, capturing streaming audio which cannot be downloaded and converting the audio from

    2. Alternately, iTunes will let you burn this file to cd which you can then rip to mp3 using dBpowerAMP Music Converter.

You do need the Power Pack to be able to encode files to mp3, although people who have the trial version of dBpowerAMP Music Converter have a 30 full featured trial to help them decide whether they want to use the registered version. dBpowerAMP has never been capable of directly converting m4p files to any other format all on its own and will very likely never do so, unless Apple should decide to loosen its DRM policies (which appears to be very highly unlikely). I do not think that there are currently any other programs that can do so either (although there are programs that can assist in the same manner as dBpowerAMP is able to do).

    Best wishes,
    Bill

      Re: Convert m4p to mp3?

The problem is that the file is protected with DRM and dBpowerAMP Music Converter simply cannot decrypt it.

There are a couple of workarounds. They involve:

      1. Burning an audio cd from itunes and then ripping it usind dMC.
      2. Recording the audio through your soundcard as it is ebing played by the player than can play the file, using dMC Auxiliary Input.
      3. For other possibilities please check the DRM forum section

In my opinion, the Auxiliary Input is the best choice, because you don't have to waste time burning a CD, plus you get to listen to that song (hopefully you LIKE the song, otherwise you wouldn't be converting the damn thing ) while it's "real-time converting" in Auxiliary Input.

        Good luck!
