    Question about unregistered version

    Hello,

I am using dbPowerAMP for only converting Mp3 to AAC. I wanted to know what happens when my 30 days expire for the Mp3 encoder. Will I still be able to convert my Mp3s to AAC files, or do I need to buy an license?

No, since the license concerns encoding to mp3 not decoding from mp3.

But the license also covers the use of the PowerPack which has many other very useful features.

Keep seeing this now. I could have sworn a month ago when I decided to try this, help said license was ONLY because MP3 author decided to start charging. I figured at the time I would return later and determine how to use alternate encoder that is already licensed. Now it has changed and is also for this power pack too? Why would anyone license an encoder for each individual obscure little software app? Or maybe I can use Neros, but have to look for help elsewhere?

No, the registration has always been there for the PowerPack.

What has now been added to this is that the same registration also permits using the mp3 encoder. You cannot encode to mp3 if you don't have a registered version.

You can look at it either that the PowerPack is a bonus added to the mp3 license, or the mp3 license is a bonus for the PowerPack registration.

Either way you cannot encode to mp3 through dMC without having a valid license - or an unexpired 30-day trial version.

Maybe what you are thinking is trying to use another mp3 encoder codec as a CLI. Then you can read up on that in the help files. I believe it doesn't allow all the same options, at least not without scripting.

          Thanks
I guess its really moot if it changed or not, if that is the way it is NOW, just another obscure tool for the trash...
          Uninstalling now thanks!

            Re: Question about unregistered version

If you need to encode to mp3 you don't have many viable legal options that don't require buying a registered product from here or elsewhere. You can use WIndows Media Player to rip a cd to mp3 - but without too may options as to quality - and you must start with an audio cd.

Nero would do the same - but Nero itself is a registered product, and as far as I know it costs heaps more than dBpowerAMP - except for the OEM version which, ast least in my case, didn't come with an mp3 encoder.

All this is because of patent regulations that have kicked in lately concerning the use of the mp3 format.

dmc r10 was freeware, no trial on the mp3 encoder (and is still the version i am using :D )

in a week my r11.5 trial will run out, and i will be able to verify for myself if encoding to mp3 via cli still works, as my current consern is that it will hinder anything with the mp3 extention.... (if anyone wants to answer that question, they may, but i fill figure it out soon enough on my own)

encoding via cli offers MORE options than any other method, personally i think its easier to setup the encoding settings (not to mention i can tweak the encoder that way )
